Q. Do I have to have a serious psychological problem to come to the MHWC?

No. Students come to our office to discuss a wide range of problems, big or small. There is no shame in asking for help, no matter what you are experiencing.

Asking for help to cope is a sign of strength, not weakness!

Q. Who are our staff?

Licensed mental health professionals, masters, and post-masters level interns.

Q. What type of counseling do you provide?

We provide brief therapy up to 8 sessions per academic year for free.

  • Although the length of time in counseling is limited, most students report feeling better after 1–2 sessions.
  • The type of therapy that we use draws from several modalities such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Mindfulness Based approaches.
  • This type of therapy tends to be very effective in a short amount of time, which works well for our college setting.
  • We teach self-help,  resilience skills, and sometimes assign homework or activities to do between visits to make our work together more productive.

Q.What about privacy? Are the services confidential?

Yes, the MHWC maintains a strict policy of confidentiality. See our Schedule a Confidential Appointment page and complete the forms included in Before Your First Appointment.

Q. How do I make an appointment?

  • Call 650-949-7910 or drop by our office in the Student Resource Center Building 2120, or,
  • Log in to 'my portal'; click on "apps" then the Psychological Services app. Click on FORMS and submit the completed forms.

Please call or stop by our office if you haven't heard from us in 2 business days.

We attempt to schedule a first appointment within a week.

Drop-in hours are available Monday-Friday, 12 noon-1 p.m.

Please drop in for a brief 20 minute appointment or a general question answered.

Q. How much do appointments cost?

You get up to 8 free sessions with our office per school year! If you use all 8 for the year, we will help you find a community provider and support you during your transition to that service. We are always here to help.
