Women's History Month 2018 "Together for Justice"

Lecture Series I: Muslim Artist, Activist, and Author Samina Ali

10-11 a.m.  Artist-in-residence Samina Ali's TEDTalk now has nearly two million views -- and her breakthrough novel Madras on Rainy Days was among the first novels published by a Muslim woman in America. Join her for a continuing discussion of the role of Muslim Women in America and worldwide.

12 noon-1 p.m. Our author in residence, Samina Ali is the world famous curator of the critically-acclaimed exhibition  Muslima: Muslim Women's Art & Voices. Sponsored by the Global Fund for Women, this exhibition is a groundbreaking collection of thought pieces and artwork from contemporary Muslim women from around the world who are defining their own identities and, in the process, shattering pervasive stereotypes. Samina’s presentation will focus on both her work and the work of contemporary Muslim women artists in resistance to fundamentalism globally.

1:30-2:30 p.m. Join our artist-in-residence --celebrated novelist, activist, and curator Samina Ali-- for a continued lecture/discussion regarding the role of Muslim Women in America and worldwide.

Workshop: Self-Defense Clinic

Learn about world-class street-smart self-defense training for all ages, fitness and skill levels. Instructor Cordelia Clancy packs a powerful skill set for teaching others how to address the dangers of violent crime. Clancy was the first female hand-to-hand combat instructor to train security for the Pentagon's top-ranked General. In addition, Clancy has been called upon to train law enforcement, military special forces and homeland security personnel. Her passion remains empowering people with the skills and street-smarts to "Be your own Bodyguard."

The Evolvement of the #MeToo Movement and its Impact Around the World: International Women’s Day

In 2017, women around the world shared their stories of sexual harassment and sexual assault in response to the #MeToo tweet. But did you know that the #MeToo Movement actually started in 2006? 17³Ô¹Ï We for She Club members will present how #MeToo Movement evolved, what the movement is about, and more! In spirit of International Women’s Day, We for She Club will present how #MeToo affected women globally. Attend and learn about the movement that has affected millions around the world!

Please join 17³Ô¹Ï Communication Studies Instructor Che Meneses for a collaborative, dynamic and candid conversation addressing verbal and non-verbal forms of sexual harassment in the workplace. This informative discussion covers key information that includes what people can do to train and inform each other to assume a responsible, professional, and equitable approach in dealing with workplace sexual harassment and how to identify appropriate versus inappropriate workplace communication.

As seen by the #MeToo Movement, sexual harassment is a prevalent issue, including in the workplace. This workshop is dedicated to bringing awareness of sexual harassment at work. 17³Ô¹Ï We for She Club members will present on the differences of sexual harassment, sexual assault, signs of sexual harassment, and the impact it has on employees, followed by a Know Your Rights section presented by sexual harassment lawyer, Katrina Saleen.

Come meet and hear from Lesley Louden, the artist whose art will be displayed in the 17³Ô¹Ï Hubert H. Semans Library throughout March, and see her exhibit which features a series of photographs of students, teachers, and parents in primary schools in Botswana and Lesotho that observed the simultaneous focus on modern education as well as the importance of the preservation of cultural tradition for students and families. Artist Lesley Louden received her BFA in photography from Ohio Wesleyan University, her MA in photo-media from the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, and her MFA in photography at Cranbrook Academy of Art. Lesley teaches photography at 17³Ô¹Ï, West Valley-Mission College, and Cabrillo College. Her work has been featured in galleries and museums nationally and internationally. Complimentary refreshments will be served.

Lecture Series III: Women's Activism, from the Progressive Movement to #MeToo

The #MeToo movement has sparked interest in women's activism, but this is not the first time that women have taken to the streets and the media to attempt to bring about change. One of the great periods of change was the Progressive Era in the United States, which culminated in the right of women to vote.  How significant were women in the Progressive Movement, locally and nationally? And how did this movement influence the international movements with similar goals? Hear from Professor & Chair, Departments of History & Women's Studies, 17³Ô¹Ï Secretary, Academic Senate for California Community Colleges (ASCCC) Dolores Davison and feel empowered!

Film Festival: Pre-Law Club; The Hunting Ground

Women’s Empowerment: #MeToo Dinner, Dance, Guest Speakers, and Fashion Show

On March 16th, International Student Connection Club is hosting a #MeToo supporting event in the Dining Hall (17³Ô¹Ï Cafeteria), from 6 to 8 pm,  followed by the Dance Party afterwards. The event will have 7 different cuisines, a fashion show, and guest speakers. The "Me Too" movement spread virally in October 2017 as a hashtag used on social media to demonstrate the widespread prevalence of sexual assault and harassment against females, especially in the workplace. March is declared as Women's History Month, and highlights the contributions of women in history and contemporary society.  Please join us to celebrate all women around the world, and demonstrate support for gender equity!

As a destress before finals, women's empowerment is a full body experience.  Feeling and being empowered comes from within, and drumming is one resource of 'tuning in' to your body, to your thoughts, to your focus and to your clarity.  As the San Francisco Bay Area organization, Women Drummer's International puts it, drumming is a way "to empower women and girls in all aspects of their lives through the message of the drum, which represents not only a musical experience, but a cultural and healing experience as well."  Please acknowledge that while this event is supporting the empowerment of women, all gender identities are welcome!
