#MauiStrong
August 13, 2023
This newsletter is a playful take on our unique address. Each week (less often in the summer) I highlight 5 messages, initiatives, and/or events where I hope we can partnerin thought, spirit, or locationto advance connection and community.
(1) #Maui Strong.
As Californians, the devastation brought by wildfire is unfortunately well- known. In 1999, while working at Chico State, I bought my first home in Paradise, California. Years later, after moving to the Bay Area, I watched news reports of my old neighborhood being burnt to the ground and heard the heart break of former neighbors ravaged by the Camp Fire. After being extinguished, the smoke, ash and homelessness continued to harm an already bereft community. Maui, like those in California, is experiencing this unique and protracted heartbreak. Since California is home to so many Native Hawaiians, let us check on our friends, send our prayers, and give to the if we are able.
(2) Busy Buzzy Summer.
While many summer sessions came to a close last week, activity on the campus and in the community was heating up. Not only have we been besieged by bees and wasps (those at the taco truck know!), last Thursday and Friday, more welcome visitors were on campus. The Bachelor's Degree Program Northern CA workshop was hosted at 17勛圖 and brought 150 attendees. Also, over the weekend, the Outreach Team was front and center at Los Altos Art in the Park meeting prospective students and past alums. Keep apprised of all the buzz by following 17勛圖 on social media: and , ,

(4) Student Trustee Nicole Nguyen for the win!
At the Student Trustees Workshop hosted by the Community College League of California, newly elected student trustees were connected to tools and resources to serve a successful term. At this years convening, our very own Nicole Nguyen was announced as the 2023-24 CCCT Student Trustee representative. Congrats Nicole!
