Writing & Language Center
Tutoring Process & Guidelines
Our Mission
The mission of the Writing and Language Center, formerly known as Teaching and Learning Center (TLC), is to provide academic reading, writing, research, and study skills support to 17³Ô¹Ï students so that they can become self-aware, active, and independent learners.
As part of the Learning Resource Center (LRC), the WLC values tutoring as one component of student learning; thus, when a student is not making progress to become an independent learner with their course material, the LRC reserves the right to restrict or set limits on the number and duration of tutoring sessions.
Tutoring Services
The WLC offers one-to-one skills-based support with faculty and peer tutors.
- In a session, a tutor will ask the student questions to help identify strategies to finish his or her work effectively and independently.
- All students will sign a contract outlining the WLC policies before their first session.
Our faculty and peer tutors help students to:
- Identify frequent grammatical or mechanical mistakes and how to fix them.
- Write clearly and concisely.
- Identify strategies to become active editors and proofreaders.
- Identify strategies for reading comprehension and note-taking.
Because the role of a tutor is helping students become independent learners—equipped with knowledge and skills to be successful on their own—WLC tutors will NOT revise, edit, or proofread writing.
Subjects We Support
The WLC provides help with reading, writing, and research across all disciplines/subjects. Whether you are working on an English essay, or reasearch project for your Geography class, we're here to help!
