Music Technology

Sequence & Requirements

Recommended Course Sequence

There are two types of students who enter our program; those who seek a degree or certificate, and those who are looking for technical training or academic enlightenment. If you are seeking a degree, we suggest you begin in Fall Quarter, and take the courses in this sequence:

Year One

Fall:

  • MTEC 50A Introduction to Music Technology (4 Units)
  • ONE course from the following:
    • MTEC 49 History of Music Technology (4 units)
    • or MUS 9B Music & Media: Hendrix to Hip-Hop (4 units)
    • or MUS 11D History of Electronic Music: Origins-1970 (4 units)
    • or MUS 11E History of Electronic Music: 1970-Present (4 units)
  • 1 GE requirement
  • 1 Electives
  • Total Units = 15/17 (depending on GE and Electives)

 

Winter:

  • ONE course from the following:
    • MTEC 70A Pro Tools 101-Avid Certification (4 units)
    • or MTEC 72B Producing Music with Ableton Live (4 units)
    • or MTEC 72C Producing Music with Logic Pro X (4 units)
  • 1 GE requirement
  • 2 Electives
  • Total Units = 15/17 (depending on GE and Electives)

 

Spring

  • ONE course from the following:
    • MTEC 51A Studio Recording I (4 units) 
    • or MTEC 60A Producing in the Home Studio I (4 units)
  • 1 GE requirement
  • 2 Electives
  • Total Units = 15/17 (depending on GE and Electives)

Year Two

Fall:

  • MTEC 52A Mixing & Mastering I (4 units)
  • MTEC 55A Introduction to Game Audio (4 units)
  • 1 GE requirement
  • 1 Elective
  • Total Units = 15/17 (depending on GE and Elective)

 

Winter:

  • MTEC 62A Composing & Producing Electronic Music I (4 units)
  • 1 Support Course (4 units)
  • 1 GE requirement
  • 1 Elective
  • Total Units = 15/17 (depending on GE and Elective)

 

Spring:

  • MTEC 57A Sound Design for Film & Video (4 units)
  • 1 Support Course (4 units)
  • 1 GE requirement
  • 1 Elective
  • Total Units = 15/17 (depending on GE and Elective)

With this plan, you finish the core courses and electives in two years (six academic quareters). 

If you decide to take Summer classes, this schedule can be accelerated!
