Lecture Series I: Islamophobia in Europe and banning the Hijab
2:30 p.m.

Featuring American author and activist Samina Ali. Ali serves as the curator of Muslima: Muslim Women’s Art and Voices, a global, virtual exhibition for the International Museum of Women, now part of Global Fund for Women. She is the co-founder of American Muslim feminist organization Daughters of Hajar and has been a frequent advocate for Muslim women’s rights. Join her talk on Islamophobia in Europe and the policies regarding Hijab.

Community organizer and civic leader Kareem Syed discusses the core values and foundational pillars of Islam as well as how effective practice ultimately enhances community engagement.

Kareem Syed is Community Organizer and Civic leader. He is  a cofounder of the Los Gatos Anti Racism Coalition and an Interfaith Leader in Los Gatos and Saratoga. He is currently serving as a Civil Grand Juror for Santa Clara County and working on completing his Masters in Islamic Studies Leadership from Chicago Theological Seminary.

Immigration, Lawyering and Islam

Roxana Moussavian is an immigration attorney and Co-Director of Pangea Legal Services, a non-profit based in San Francisco that defends immigrants against government deportation. At Pangea, Roxana works mostly with and for immigrants with disabilities. She holds a J.D. from Yale Law School. Prior to law school, Roxana worked as a Policy Advisor for the Obama Administration’s National Economic Council where her portfolio included community college policies. She is a Muslim and the daughter of Iranian immigrants to the United States.

Sengal's Messengers of Peace

Most Senegalese belong to one of four Sufi Muslim brotherhoods, a mystical sect of Islam. Join FC Photography Professor Ron Herman for a look at the Muridyya, Senegal’s most influential brotherhood, which blends African customs with traditional Islamic practices. Their doctrine consists of pacifism, prayer and work.

Ahmed Mostafa is currently a policy specialist at Google focusing on Elections & Misinformation. Ahmed is also a Pro Bono attorney with Equal Rights Advocates where he takes on Title IX cases. 

During his time at 17³Ô¹Ï, Ahmed reestablished the Muslim Student Association (MSA) after it was dormant for several years. As President of the Associated Students of 17³Ô¹Ï (ASFC), Ahmed helped establish the colleges first Muslim heritage day, negotiated with Dean of Arts to open extra classes required for transfer, made .edu e-mail addresses available to students, saved the tutorial service programs, and generated first-ever profit in all Associated Students businesses.

Hatem Bazian is a co-founder and Professor of Islamic Law and Theology at Zaytuna College, the 1st Accredited Muslim Liberal Arts College in the United States. In addition to academic work, Dr, Bazian is a weekly columnist for the Turkish Daily Sabah Newspaper and Turkey Agenda online magazine. Dr. Bazian is founder and national Chair of American Muslims for Palestine, board member of the Islamic Scholarship Fund, Muslim Legal Fund of America, President of Dollar for Deen Charity, and Chair of Northern California Islamic Council.

Ammad Wajahat Rafiqi was born and partly raised in Kashmir and works with Stand With Kashmir as a Bay Area organizer educating individuals and communities on the occupation of Kashmir by Indian armed forces through workshops/webinars on college campuses, with allies and associated groups. SWK works on empowering the local community advocates  to engage in education, outreach, grassroots organizing and solidarity to raise awareness on Kashmir. Beyond his advocacy for Kashmir, Rafiqi is the Civil Rights & Legal Services Coordinator for the San Francisco Bay Area office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-SFBA).  In this role, he is responsible for coordinating the work of the Legal Services team, including their representation of clients facing religious discrimination/denial of accommodation at work or in public spaces and law enforcement harassment, as well as their documentation of targeted hate towards American Muslims.
