LHM: ZUMBA - MENTAL WELLNESS MONDAY SERIES I

Come dance with us! My name is David Herrera Silva, I have been in the world of dance for over 22 years. I started in this amazing journey with Mexican Folklorico, followed by ballet and now Zumba. I have been a Zumba fitness instructor since 2015, currently teaching at 24 Hour Fitness and Crunch. During this pandemic, I am teaching Zumba via Zoom which is amazing because we can connect from anywhere and have a blast. Zumba brings satisfaction and joy to everyone. it's an opportunity to escape problems, stress and anxiety. Zumba opens the door where you can be free and enjoy the music with yourself and it gives you a great workout! Isnt this amazing! This is the reason why we call it Our happy hour. My goal is to bring happiness, confidence, stress free and a great workout through music and movements to everyone, because music is life.

You are encouraged to attend the Associated Students of 17勛圖 (ASFC) Student Government Campus Council/Student Activities Office's Heritage & Health Series Annual Latinx Heritage Month (LHM) Opening Ceremony on Wednesday, May 6, from 12-1 p.m. during College Hour. "Horchata with Thuy & Laurie" was created during this unique covid crisis with intentions for you to leave feeling edified and empowered, thinking with a new mind-set, and in turn ready to act by LEADING! A crisis can lead to a season of relying more on your head, heart and hands combination to survive and shape your future. Hear 17勛圖 President Thuy T. Nguyen, ASFC Activities Heritage Month Coordinator and LHM Chairwoman Jasslie Altamirano, Define American Club and Puente Club ICC Club Government Rep. Joshua Contreras speak about their roots, per the month's theme:

"Unidos por nuestras Ra穩ces" "United by our Roots."

Your brain, body and spirit will be enlightened after hearing the heartfelt and history-making leadership story of Dr. Laurie Scolari, 17勛圖's beloved Associate Vice President of Student Services, our LHM keynote speaker. Dr. Scolari will present her personal and professional history about her heritage and health triumphs and how she grew up in the lettuce fields of California's Salinas Valley after her mother emigrated to California from Mexico. Laurie's upbringing shaped her into the powerful leader she is today, and hearing from her, will allow your brain to envision your own history and struggles as a launching pad for your present and future successes. Dr. Scolari became a Doctor of Education at San Francisco State University and did her dissertation in First-Generation Students of Color: Easing their Transition to Community College. Her unique health and heritage story will open your eyes to the options of considering healing and hope during this time, and in the future. This social justice soldier is a change agent for communities of color and now also is for her new 17勛圖 Family that she is leading!

Dr. Laurie Scolari previously worked for the California Community College Chancellors Office as the Guided Pathways Regional Coordinator for the San Francisco Bay Area. In that capacity, she supported colleges in the implementation of Guided Pathways, Vision for Success, and AB 705. She is also a lecturer in San Francisco State Universitys doctoral program where she teaches courses on policy and law in education. Previously, Dr. Scolari was the Director of the Our Children Our Families Council, a citywide collective impact project for The City of San Francisco. She also served as the Dean of Counseling and Student Support Services at City College of San Francisco. In that capacity, she spearheaded several successful data-driven initiatives aimed at improving the transition of high school students of color into the community college with sustainable results. Dr. Scolaris work entitled, You Cant Point Fingers at Data: Cross-agency Collaboration and Shared Data from a Community Perspective was published by Harvard Education Press. Dr. Scolari also previously worked at University of California Santa Cruz for ten years and held several positions including the Early Academic Outreach Program (EAOP) Director, Gaining Early Awareness for Undergraduate Program (GEAR UP) Director, and Associate Director of the Educational Partnership Center.

The Rapid Response Network (RRN) in Santa Clara County is a community defense project developed to protect immigrant families from deportation threats and to provide accompaniment support during and after a community member's arrest or detention.

Roma is a 2018 drama film set in 1970 and 1971. The plot follows the life of a live-in housekeeper of a middle-class family, as a semi-autobiographical take on Cuar籀n's upbringing in the Colonia Roma neighborhood of Mexico City. The film had its world premiere at the 75th Venice International Film Festival on 30 August 2018, where it won the Golden Lion. *Roma is rated R, but is suitable for college students.

Join us in making empanadas! What is an Empanada you may ask: Essentially, empanadas are stuffed dough pockets. They almost look like a mini calzone. Instead of being folded over pizza, they're filled with anything from sweet potatoes and Brie to carne mechada, depending on the region. They can also be baked or fried, sweet or savory, and can be eaten as a snack or a meal. This is an Argentinian staple, traditionally made with meat! Come cook with Daniela Pearl, a Native Argentitan!
