LGBTQ+HM: MENTAL WELLNESS SERIES I - ZUMBA Zumba provides a great workout with music and movements that everyone can do and enjoy, along with the opportunity to relieve stress and anxiety! Come dance with David Herrera Silva, who has been teaching Zumba since 2015 and involved in the world of dance for more than 22 years. Silva started his amazing journey with Mexican Folklorico, followed by ballet and now Zumba. During this pandemic, he has been teaching Zumba via Zoom, which is amazing because we can connect with him from anywhere and have a blast This is a recurring Monday event through June 15. Former 17勛圖 student Sophia Falco is a poet who has significantly struggled with bipolar disorder. Her poems have been published in Stigma Fighters, The Mindful Word, The Esthetic Apostle, The Festival Review, Tiny Seed Literary Journal, The Poetry Matters Project, and forthcoming in The Raw Art Review. LGBTQ+HM: MENTAL WELLNESS SERIES: MURAL MAKING GUEST ARTIST SAMANTHA LAZCANO
Samantha Lazcano has been an active artist in Fresno, California for about 15 years now, including work on solo and group shows in LA, murals making, and teaching ages 5 to 99 years old. Samantha is currently working on a mural in the southeast side of Fresno in relationship to current issues with Black Lives Matter. She and fellow artist friends are creating a mural that describes Brown lives supporting Black lives. During these tough times, join us for a fun workshop to learn how to use household items to create fun and exciting art pieces. Hear from your fellow 17勛圖 students and join us as we de-stress and relax together by engaging ourselves in creative thought and action. Please do not feel pressured to go out and buy art supplies. As she struggles to reconcile her professional ambitions, personal relationships, religious beliefs, and internalized shame, Abigail receives guidance from First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and Eleanor's devoted friend and lover, Lorena Hickok. LGBTQ+HM: LECTURE SERIES IV - LAWYER JOSEPH FRUEN
Join local attorney and community advocate, J.R. Fruen, for an examination of the legal impediments to the full inclusion of the LGBTQ+ community in American society. The conversation will begin with a general overview of these legal roadblocks, followed by a closer look at the path to legalized same-sex marriage in the United States, tracing its history from Baker v. Nelson to Obergefell v. Hodges. The discussion will then turn to more local matters, such as exclusionary zoning and city planning practices that disproportionately affect minority groups--especially the LGBTQ+ community--as well as California's efforts at a remedy. Finally, the dialogue will conclude with recent legal developments in equitable bathroom and locker room access for the transgender community. J.R. is an attorney with his own practice in nearby Cupertino. He is a co-founder of the local advocacy organization, Cupertino for All, which seeks to make Cupertino and its neighboring communities more inclusive and equitable. LGBTQ+HM: COLLEGE HOUR - CLOSING CEREMONY WITH GUEST SPEAKER SHANT FRANCO-CLAUSEN
Please join us for the closing ceremony event for the LGBTQ+ heritage month, we will hear from leaders in the community, and have a porch talk about the community, and the positive and negative experiences that people may have gone through. This event is a discussion that is open to all, however any form of hate or disrespect will not be tolerated. Our guest speaker will be Shant獺 Franco-Clausen, also known as "Shay," a fierce, strong, dynamic powerhouse, who works tirelessly to create a voice of the voiceless in Santa Clara County. Shay has been a community organizer for the last 15 years, leading community cleanups, beach and creek cleanups, advocating for environmental social justice, mentoring youth, advocating for justice-involved women and girls, and running political campaigns.
