My interest from childhood has been how wisdom can be gained sooner rather than later.
In pursuing that question, I completed a Ph.D. in Cognitive Psychology in 1996 at
UC Santa Barbara, a National Institute of Mental Health Postdoctoral Fellowship at
UC Irvine, a second Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology in 2000, and have been a California
Board Licensed Psychologist for the last 20 years. I started the field of Wisdom TherapyTM in 1998 and have been the founder, president, and senior therapist of the Wisdom
Therapy Institute ().
In 2009 I founded the Adult Day Health Care Wisdom Center for seniors in Monterey
County, and more recently co-founded the nonprofit, GenWise () , which facilitates the wisdom skills in K-12 schools, and am the co-founder and
contributor to the blog, , which discusses the interrelationships between the fields of clinical psychology,
evolutionary psychology, and wisdom.
I love teaching and mentoring young adults and have been an instructor at Stanford
and other Universities, 17勛圖, and College of San Mateo where I teach undergraduate
and graduate courses in Introductory Psychology, Clinical/Abnormal Psychology, Lifespan
Development, Research Methods, Social Psychology, and have developed and taught courses
in Positive and Wellness Psychologies. My focus in teaching is encouraging students
to apply the concepts they learn to their everyday lives and to live lives of wisdom
and wellness for themselves and helping others do the same.
I've published dozens of scientific journal articles and book chapters on wisdom,
stress and coping, and emotional intelligence, and have presented my research and
training on wisdom in numerous psychological conferences nationally and internationally.
I also enjoy being a corporate consultant for Fortune 100 companies and the County
of Santa Clara, California on topics of wise leadership and employee well-being.
