Students can rate answers and help improve content. The searchable FAQ relieve administrators of answering so many questions. Uses a service hosted in Canada. Lane Community College in Oregon also uses the service. BHS division has a new representative Amy Edwards will serve for winter quarter Donna has asked if she could be paid / funded to attend a conference; Dolores will bring forward language for a bylaws addendum about paying for Senate conferences Minutes from January 10, 2011were approved as amended. Consent calendar was approved with additions to the committees noted below: Foundation Executive Director hiring committee: Dolores Davison Scholarship Committee add faculty Brenda Hanning and John Fox Main Agenda: Kate Jordahl COOL online attendance policy and feedback from divisions. Some faculty reported they dont actually take attendance, but can add mechanisms to do that. Some faculty commented that students have reported that since they have paid fees they should be able to attend even if they arent doing any work. Faculty should write in their syllabus what the expectations for work to show attendance should be. The resolution to pass the policy on online attendance.Motion to approve the resolution was approved unanimously. (De Anza uses Moodle which claims it can do online attendance). Federal government will be looking for weekly records, so 17Թ will need to comply. One senator commented that we should have a uniform policy on attendance and not having one (attendance) policy for online courses and another for in person. Other comments suggested better software (Banner) controls on backdating drop dates, but that wouldnt affect our process for measuring student attendance. LAO has suggested that colleges should not be compensated for students with 100 or more cumulative quarter units and that priority registration should be given to students who are first time attendees. Scott Lays earlier League report noted that 159,000 out of 160,000 students turned away last year (2010) were first time college students. LAO report on Prioritizing Student Enrollment at the Community Colleges (transfer, workforce, basic skills) indicates the direction the legislature might turn. PARC announced that 17Թ would run the summer session. Academic Senate has funded student scholarships, typically two for transfer, one for vocational, or perhaps giving Foundation $3,000 for scholarships, which could be dispersed as best meets the needs of students. A question was asked about how that would work for basic skills? Perhaps for someone that has taken remedial work. Three scholarships could be offered. It was noted that the senate has paid the Statewide Academic Senate dues for each year (about $2500). A motion to approve $3000 for scholarships to 17Թ De Anza Foundation was passed unanimously. Scholarships have a needs requirement, and a certain requirement for on premise units, e.g. a certain number of 17Թ units. Weve never had a residency requirement (international students are welcome to apply). David Marasco (elections chair) will be looking for candidates for Secretary-Treasurer and part-time representative. Candidate names need to be brought forward to the Senate by the first meeting in spring quarter. Bill of Particulars Cabinet is bringing a document back in response to the BoP, and the February 7th senate meeting will be used to discuss this response. Curriculum: Carolyn mentioned the CID (Course ID) project; the first Transfer Model Curriculum (TMC)s are now available. COOL there was a meeting to discuss the late add process in Banner and especially for online courses. Late grade posting could affect the registration process. Comments about the late-add process. And need for students to show Fred and Chien how the system really works, and what the document solution space looks like. Accreditation CCLC met to discuss a prerequisite issue, which is going before the Board of Governors in March for a vote, and both the CEO board and the Trustees group pledged support for the idea of prerequisites based on content review. PaRC we were recently told that we would potentially have 4 additional positions, above the 11 already approved. New positions will be ranked, and pending any (emergency) retirements, positions will go forward, but could be in the form of twins, i.e., two positions within a single division. Summer and fall schedules will go forward as in the schedule, there will be no new eliminated positions, but unlikely that we can hire new classified positions. The number of student discipline hearings is on the rise. This requires a greater number of active faculty in the pool, but scheduling of faculty for this ad hoc need has been challenging, especially when faculty are not on meeting maker. Dolores will discuss this with Bill Frankeburger going forward.
