Melanie Hale spoke to the Senate about the new 17Թ Institute for CC mental health. The purpose of this institute is to provide professional development and training opportunities for mental health for the entire 17Թ community, including faculty, staff, administration, and students. The first series of training will be the suicide prevention training program, QPR for Suicide Prevention. (QPR = Question, Persuade & Respond) The tentative dates for this first series of training are May 19-21, 2008. Senators were specifically asked to inform their constituents of this training opportunity, and request that interested faculty contact Melanie so that she can get a better idea of how many faculty are interested. The Institute is also hoping to bring in an expert in cognitive behavioral therapy in the Fall, 2008 quarter. Textbook Rental Policy Davison. Senators brought back feedback from their constituents regarding the proposed textbook rental policy. The general consensus was that there had been no negative feedback in response to the policy. Brian Evans mentioned that freeloadpress.com offers free textbooks. A motion to support the textbook rental policy was made and seconded, and unanimously approved. CAC/Roundtable Report Davison Budget reduction guidelines were discussed; changes are being made and will be brought to the committee The proposed Articulation Policies were approved. Proposed policy regarding the naming of buildings The FHDA Foundation has drafted a revised policy for the naming of buildings, and this policy was presented and discussed at the most recent CAC meeting. Copies of the policy were distributed to senators, and the senators were asked to share the policy with their constituents and pass feedback along to Dolores. Student proposal to rename Toyon Room the student leadership has requested that the Toyon Room be re-designated as the Student Council Chambers. The students argued that the current Student Council Chambers are inadequate to house the 47 members of student government. Senators raised concerns about other student issues, including club participation and impact on student success; the Senate asked that Don and/or Daphne be invited to a future Senate meeting to discuss these concerns. Board policy on textbooks the policy will be sent back to the APM committee for revision. CCC update Holcroft-Burns. Senators were informed that the CCC is currently in the process of revising the General Education pattern, and that faculty will soon be asked to review and provide feedback on these revisions. Titles for many of the certificates offered by 17Թ must change in order to be in compliance with state Title V guidelines. Division CCC representatives should be in touch with appropriate faculty members to execute these needed title changes, with a March 1, 2008 deadline. Questions regarding these changes should be forwarded to either Carolyn or Dolores. Elections timeline Morasci. The offices of Senate President and Vice President are up for election this spring quarter. Written intentions to run for office must be submitted to the elections committee by the end of February. EIS adoption Davison. Sungard Banner has been adopted as the new FHDA information system. It is anticipated that it will take approximately two to three years to fully implement the new system. Part Time Faculty Survey Davison. The Statewide Senate Education Policies Committee has created a survey about part time faculty. The intention is for the survey to be completed by each colleges Senate President. However, as Dolores is a member of the Education Policies Committee, it will be more appropriate for another full time faculty member to complete the survey for 17Թ. Volunteers should contact Dolores. Calendar Survey Update Davison. A two-question survey will be soon be e-mailed to all FHDA faculty (probably next week) to assess faculty interest in changing the FHDA academic calendar. Senators were asked to encourage their constituents to participate in the survey and to be certain to pass this information on the their constituents and part time faculty in particular. ART-STOR informational session will be presented during college hour on Wednesday, February 20. Contact Karen Gillette for more information.
