Announcements Kathy Cox from the Statewide Academic Senate attended the meeting for a local visit. She asked if the senators had any burning issues. One senator asked if there would be a resolution at the State Plenary to support our K-12 counterparts who are facing drastic budget cuts. Kathy mentioned that it’s possible a resolution will come up. Senators who would like to draft a resolution should take language to Dolores or Kathy at the Statewide Senate. Academic Senate Spring Plenary will be held on April 17, 18, and 19. Senators can view the resolutions on-line at both the 17ГдЙЯ and Statewide Academic Senate websites. Shirley Barker will attend an upcoming Senate meeting to discuss Measure C updates. The good news is that an appellate court refused to hear the suit against the measure, which gave the project a green light. Rich Morasci announced that tenured faculty are eligible to have commencement garb purchased for them. Senators should tell constituents to email Rich if they would like to be on the list. Senators were reminded about the 6-word memoir contest for the SLO Convocation. Keith Lee was introduced as the Fine Arts Senate Representative, replacing Preston Ni. Dolores called for volunteers for the Teaching and Learning Steering Committee, a District committee headed by the Chancellor. Interested faculty should contact Carolyn. Approval of Minutes The March 17, 2008, minutes were approved as amended. Action & Information . 17ГдЙЯ Resolutions A resolution commending Paul Starer for his service to the Academic Senate was approved. A resolution written in support of the Classified Staff was tabled for a later date. APM/CAC Update The Chancellor’s Advisory Committee had a legislation luncheon with 4 local legislators attending: Jim Biehl, Ira Ruskin, Sally Lieber, and Joe Simitian. The budget news from Sacrament is dire and seems to be getting worse. While there is a projected large shortfall in the May revise, there will be no faculty lay-offs. The animals on campus policy will be sent to the board for the May 5 meeting. Student trustees want to change the recall of student trustee policy so that the student trustees are not beholden to the student government but rather are held accountable by the entire student body. The students will work on language for a policy change for next year. The Academic and Professional Matters Committee announced a publications and materials policy stating that materials should be chosen for pedagogical reasons and not for profit. The policy also indicates that if materials are developed to be used solely in the district, they should be sold at cost. The plan is for a first reading of the policy to come to the Board in May. The Committee is working on an academic freedom policy this spring. The policy will come to the Senate before going to the Board. Senate Transition A proposal to nominate Carolyn Holcroft-Burns to serve as Academic Senate President for Spring and Summer Quarters was brought forth. The proposal was approved. The following positions were approved by acclamation: Dolores Davison to serve a two-year term as Academic Senate President Carolyn Holcroft-Burns to serve a two-year term as Academic Senate Vice-President. District Senate President The District Senate President position falls to 17ГдЙЯ for the next academic year. The duties include: attending the CAC meetings, serving as chair for APM, serving as a voting delegate at state plenary sessions, helping to plan Opening Day with the District, working on Board policies. The position must be filled by a current or former officer of the Senate. A name for this position will be brought to the April 28 meeting. 1900 Building Update A floor plan is posted in the administration building to show the space allowance for faculty and staff use. Dolores will send a strongly worded email to President Judy Miner that a committee should be formed to discuss the uses of this space and that all constituents (including the senators appointed to sit on the committee last year) should be included. At issue is what the space will be used for: partitions, long tables, refrigerator, microwave, etc. It was suggested that the email should that the two senators, Karen Gillette and Rich Morasci, have been appointed to this committee since last year. Statewide Resolutions Some of the controversial and interesting resolutions to be discussed at the Statewide Plenary are: Concurrent enrollment for high school students GE/AP equivalency – how AP classes and tests are counted is not consistent statewide. A resolution will be presented that seeks a standardized process for counting AP classes. The main concern is the issue of local control vs. standardization. Support for on-line counseling There will also be sessions on the disciplines list, which sets minimum qualifications for faculty positions. The committee will likely add a third category to require a specific Bachelor’s degree (such as Graphic Design) instead of a general Bachelor’s plus 2 years experience. Senators should read the paper on grade distribution about grade inflation in the community colleges. The issue of reducing textbook costs, a standard issue for the Statewide Academic Senate, will also likely be presented. All information on the Plenary is on the 17ГдЙЯ Academic Senate website. Area Resolutions Regarding the issue of the College of the Siskiyous, participants at the Area B meeting concluded that the Academic Senate doesn’t typically call out individuals in a resolution; therefore, any resolution coming forward to deal with the issue will likely deal generally with supporting the faculty at the college in their educational programs. Regarding electronic approvals, the participants at Area B suggested that 17ГдЙЯ consult the technology committee before making decisions about electronic voting. Dolores Davison adjourned the meeting at 3:50 pm. Submitted by Tess Hansen (April 23, 2008) +>XhнхN\.пюЃ2фљ]sе§љљљ§§§§§§§5>*5*+>WXhлмнхMN\]!
