Rachel Mudge will replace Chris DiLeonardo as senator from the PSME division through spring quarter. The presidential search received 50 applications, from which13 interviews were offered, and have 11 accepted. The State of the Valley Event, held in San Jose February 2nd, 2007, was well attended by 17ГдЙЯ and De Anza faculty and administrators. The consent calendar was approved. The minutes from January 8th and January 22nd were approved with amendments as noted. Debbie Budd and Jim Zavado presented an update on Measures E and C, which included updating the facilities master plan. Debbie showed the new areas of construction, and current and future projects. There will be a new front door to the campus, including a ‘water feature’ near the new roundabout. The circle road can be moved but stay within the borders of the campus. Even with the new science building, this will allow for a more parking spaces ~300-400 more. The police department will located at the new front door. Debbie listed the actual and projected FTES for 2204, 2010, and 2015 2004 10,511 FTES 2010 11,510 FTES 2015 12,497 FTES The total assignable sq. footage will be 383,581 sq feet when finished, including an update of the science and dentistry buildings. Some campus functions will move around. The new buildings will be Energy Star"! vs. LEED certified. There is a significant budget for HVAC and electrical renovations. The list of classroom renovations was shown in a very large list. An environmental impact report will need to be filed for the master plan. CTIS ETUDES-NG report – Robert Cormia presented the results of a working group discussion and analysis of ETUDES-NG, including a list of concerns the division had about the CMS. This report was shared with Judy Baker, who developed a number of remedies that addressed key issues, and shared those with the CTIS division in a letter that has been shared with the Senate. Judy has shared with the CTIS division how helpful the document was in identifying key concerns of faculty, and how to effectively address the more urgent problems. Penny Patz addressed the senate about how the college got to where we are today with ETUDES-NG. Penny acknowledged the hard transition that early adopters of ETUDES-NG had, and perhaps the beta program was launched a bit too early. Penny talked about the possibility of Classic being extended through summer, which couldn’t be done because the personnel with all the ‘Classic’ knowledge were now on the ETUDES-NG project. Penny also agreed that we were now a consumer of the NG system, rather than a direct participant, as we were with ETUDES Classic. The College had even looked into the possibility of training a consultant to help keep Classic support through summer. Penny also spoke about hiring of two new interns to help in the conversation. For ETUDES Alliance members working with Web CT and Blackboard, conversion to ETUDES-NG was easier than for Classic. Senators asked about the number of classes that have been converted. One senator commented on the change in the NG system since their fist training session, and another suggested an ETUDES-NG refresher course for faculty who trained a long time ago, but needed an update to catch up with recent changes. Faculty should use the online request form for requesting help in converting Classic shells to ETUDES – NG. Judy Baker demonstrated the FG faculty support website. Paul Starer has started a group to receive comments about NG, and faculty support (or not) for ETUDES – NG CMS. It is up to senators to create a resolution about ETUDES – NG, if we want the senate to take a position different than the choice of ETUDES-NG as our CMS. A senator commented that the dialog about NG included same frustration about communication and process. Another comment was made that faculty should not have to know about software and functionality; we should just be able to use the CMS. Additional comments were made about adding new features to NG through the Alliance, once the ‘production version’ of NG is stable. Judy Baker will be able to represent our needs, and be our advocate in the ETUDES alliance. Karen Gillette presented a final resolution for block scheduling. Senators discussed the resolution’s language as being a bit rigid, especially with respect to using the word ‘insist’ in the final whereas. The second whereas was struck, and the final whereas changed ‘insist’ to ‘urge’. One senator suggested that there can be an optimized rather than compromised approach to scheduling, and recommend a working group to study scheduling. A comment was made that deans actually work on much of the schedule, and whether block or blended, a larger systematic approach to understanding how to arrive at an ideal schedule should be pursued.. Further discussion included a reminder that there is growing anecdotal evidence that students are having difficulty creating schedules when taking classes in different divisions, and there have been a number of situations where the block scheduling has led to students taking three finals in one day. The resolution was passed by a vote of 12 to 1 with two abstentions. Paul Starer will send a letter to the President informing her of the senates position on blended vs. block scheduling. Ballot changes – Paul Starer showed the final ballot language – and it was approved.
