Open forum is from 1:30 to 2:30, and faculty forum is from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Dolores Davison will be moderating both sessions. Forms will be available for faculty feedback on each of the candidates. Please announce to your division and plan to attend these sessions. The secretary-treasurer position is still open - please contact Paul Starer if you are interested. Elections will be held in spring if more than one candidate applies. Disciplines list is posted; please review some of the minimum qualifications that are being changed or suggested; here are new disciples in the list as well. Changes or suggestions need to be reviewed by faculty to get a consensus to Paul, Dolores, and Bob before spring plenary academic senate. The disciplines list will affect faculty who may wish to teach in these disciples. Faculty from around the state create the requests for new disciples or changes; disciplines list changes are important and should be considered. The senate meeting March 5th has been cancelled to allow for a senate officers meeting and an elections committee meeting. Faculty robes have been purchased for faculty. It is a very large expense, made possible through the use of ‘one time’ state money. Tom Friedman will speak at an energy conference at Stanford on Friday. An astronaut will speak on campus Wednesday evening about searching for earth-like planets. George McGovern will be speaking in Palo Alto March 7th. Minutes from February 19th should include a comment that non-teaching faculty, e.g., library and counseling, are included. The award is in recognition of teaching excellence, rather than simply a faculty award. The minutes were approved with changes as noted. The consent calendar was also approved. Agenda items Kathy Klein addressed the senate about the new Educational Information System (EIS) project – also known in industry as Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP system). This system will replace our Student Information System (SIS). The EIS team will need help from faculty to identify needs to build the best EIS/SIS/ERP system. There are three phases, including the functional requirements gathering, gap analysis, implementation, conversion and training, then stabilization. In phase 1, we will prepare an RFP. The EIS (ERP system) will have a Decision Director Tool, which is Web based. Mike Murphy and Dan Mitchell will be soliciting input from faculty on needed requirements. All the participants (faculty, staff, students) will be polled. Questions were asked about the ERP process, gathering user requirements, mapping business process, etc. The Decision Director tool will be used to determine (so much as possible) the needs of the stakeholders from each of the comosers, so as to choose the best-fit system. Adding updates to a system that is orderly costumited can be a real chore for the IT staff support the system. Most conversions are successful, but conversions can be painful. Many staff members will be configuring training on the new system during the conversions. Comments were made about the need for consistency during the conversion process. The EIS system may work with, or replace, the (SIS) portal. The Decision tool is more about functionality than process. Staff will use the tool to give inputs in those areas. It is important that faculty give input into the tool. The process will be open for updates. The project schedule for phase one was reviewed timeline. Mike Murphy is a key contact during this process. Need data for functional & technical requirements. Will go to the FHDA board on March 5th to get approved for the purchase of the system. Abbey Brown discussed how to keep textbook prices down. There are meetings on Friday early afternoon to solicit/ ideas. Old editions, public domain, customized copies, library Reserves, and perhaps EOPS could help. EOPS can be a bit late in funding book purchases for students. Purchasing books online can also save students money. A senator spoke about the need for a better student book exchange as is now available though the student virtual campus exchange. Andy Fraknoi spoke about the need for a faculty dining area or congregation area. Please share the newer resolution with your faculty for input. Two senators commented that the award for faculty should really be an award for faculty excellence, not just teaching. Andy Fraknoi commented that a second award could address the concerns of library faculty and counselors, and other faculty who teach non-GE courses. We discussed teaching excellence vs. faculty excellence, to clarify the intent of the award. Karen Gillete, Kim, Lane, Mari Huerta, and Shannon Roosenberg, Rob Johnson agreed to serve on the committee to develop procedures for selection of the faculty nominees. The first and second resolutions presented for action were passed. The third resolution to review the faculty evaluation (tenure) was discussed, including the role of the senate and FA. The resolutions on academic freedom, and faculty chosen teaching techniques was discussed for quite a while. Academic freedom is much broader than subject matter, and includes pedagogical approach. There has been a tug-of-war around AAUP for ethics and the AAUP for academic freedom. The main issue here is not about academic freedom as freedom of speech (or subject matter) but rather to protect newly hired contenured pro-bationary faculty) from freedom to teach a given pedagogy. The resolution on academic freedom was passed with one abstention.
