Brian Evans announced a new online book trading website at HYPERLINK "http://www.foothill.edu/books" http://www.foothill.edu/books . Minutes and Consent Calendar - With the exception of typographical errors, the minutes were approved. Consent calendar was also approved. Agenda items TRC resolutions, passed last week, were discussed. There were some concerns on the part of the District over some of the proposed changes. Paul Starer and Dolores Davison will serve on a committee to academic freedom; Maristella Huerta will serve on that committee. Karen Gillette and Richard Morasci will serve on the committee as well. Rob Johnstone spoke about Basic Skills Discussion about graduation competencies. Math and English requirements were increased in the fall 2006 statewide academic senate. Colleges would need intermediate algebra to meet the requirement. A grant of $750,000 {for basic skills} was made to 17Թ to study basic skills course outlines, best practices, and will be managed by Rob Johnstone. Rob will organize a workshop to train participants from 109 colleges in some of the basic skills best practices. Rob spoke about how unprecedented this organizational effort was. Across the state, there is a systemic problem in basic skills. In 2006-07 academic years, $30M in basic skills was awarded to colleges. Rob explained how complicated the finding schema for distribution of these funds was. Rob underscored the importance of investment in basic skills programs. As an {institutional} goal, developmental education is a clearly stated institutional priority. Last week, the BOG (Board of Governors) passed a resolution (requirement) that all 109 colleges use the same placement exams, and students will be required to complete remedial work to advance in their studies. This requirement will take effect fall 2007 Generation 1.5 of ESL students may be part of the reason that otherwise high scoring high-school students, including the UCS, do not have college level writing skills. It takes training and skills to teach basic skills, so ramping up for this effort will be a challenge. There is a strong staff development effort described in the new basic skills program. Rob talked about the different challenges of teaching math and English basic skills. There will be a meeting at Mission College in late September that 17Թ can attend to learn more about the process. We discussed how the institutional research process has been recently developed at the CCS. Rob also touched on how the higher education process is not well unified in California, which makes engaging high schools in addressing this issue more challenging. Penny Patz addressed the senate on the faculty dining room. She talked the history of the development of plans in the new campus center. Penny mentioned all the spaces within the new center where faculty can get together and eat in the new center. 17Թ is very limited in our program space, so getting a dining area would be difficult. Good views and good day-lighting. The senate debated the faculty dining room, the history of the Toyon room. Some faculty felt strongly about a faculty dining room, and others felt strongly against it. Other dialog suggested that a staff development center would be more valuable than empty space. After more dialog, Andy Franknoi suggested that the faculty dining room resolution be withdrawn, and faculty development space be emphasized. A motion to postpone indefinitely the resolution for faculty dining room was passed. Dolores Davison addressed the senate on the Human Resources Advisory Committee (HRAC) Conflict Resolution Program. Senators should forward the document to their division senators for comment. Meeting was adjourned at 3:40 p.m. (*0R^_`abflr z F G \ g Q R } ~ - : Ļ͵ĻͨĘć}hShS5^J hS^JhShS0J^JjhSh5U^JjhShSU^J h^JhSh^JhShS^JhSh5<5^JhSh5<55H*hSh5<55hSh5<55\ hSh5<5 hS5\1 0R j k , - : ; ST! & p@ P !d1$7$8$H$gd5<5dgdS: ; ' E b 8Zz 4TIMEu$u{hh^JhSh^J hS^J h^JhSh5<5^JhShS^J6T! & p@ P !d1$7$8$H$50P/ =!"#$% DpDyK yK <http://www.foothill.edu/booksf 666666666vvvvvvvvv666666>6666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666hH6666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666662 0@P`p2( 0@P`p 0@P`p 0@P`p 0@P`p 0@P`p 0@P`p8XV~OJQJ_HmH nH sH tH N`N Normal dCJ^J_HaJmH sH tH VV 5<5 Heading 1$d@&5CJOJQJ^JaJDA`D Default Paragraph FontRiR 0 Table Normal4 l4a (k ( 0No List L/L 5<5Heading 1 Char5CJOJQJ^JaJ:U@: S0 Hyperlink>*B*^JphPK![Content_Types].xmlj0Eжr(΢Iw},-j4 wP-t#bΙ{UTU^hd}㨫)*1P' ^W0)T9<l#$yi};~@(Hu* Dנz/0ǰ $ X3aZ,D0j~3߶b~i>3\`?/[G\!-Rk.sԻ..a濭?PK!֧6 _rels/.relsj0 }Q%v/C/}(h"O = C?hv=Ʌ%[xp{۵_Pѣ<1H0ORBdJE4b$q_6LR7`0̞O,En7Lib/SeеPK!kytheme/theme/themeManager.xml M @}w7c(EbˮCAǠҟ7՛K Y, e.|,H,lxɴIsQ}#Ր ֵ+!,^$j=GW)E+& 8PK!Ptheme/theme/theme1.xmlYOo6w toc'vuر-MniP@I}úama[إ4:lЯGRX^6؊>$ !)O^rC$y@/yH*񄴽)޵߻UDb`}"qۋJחX^)I`nEp)liV[]1M<OP6r=zgbIguSebORD۫qu gZo~ٺlAplxpT0+[}`jzAV2Fi@qv֬5\|ʜ̭NleXdsjcs7f W+Ն7`g ȘJj|h(KD- dXiJ؇(x$( :;˹!
