Use whatever voting / election process you have used in the past. We need two senate members to serve in the tenure due process pool. This committee does not meet often, so serving might not be a large time commitment. Last year, Mary Hawkins and Kim Lane served. The committee only meets to hear due process violations related to tenure. The composition of the committee is Academic Senate 2, FA 2, and Administration 2. 17Թ administration has made a significant decision in restructuring the division reporting; BSS will now report to the VP of Instruction and Institutional Research, while Library, Bio-Health, and CTIS will report to the dean of Workforce Development and technology. Faculty from these divisions should consider serving on this hiring committee (this position was previously held by Penny Patz). Faculty speakers for commencement have been nominated, and include Brian Evans, Erik Traner (sp), and (there was one more name here???) Liberal Arts and Math are the divisions that usually produce these speakers. Students will be meeting this Thursday to consider the various names. (This list has been added to the consent calendar) committees list. Karen Gillette is coordinating the faculty retirement workshop. The minutes were approved with changes as noted, and the consent calendar was approved. Main agenda Kurt Hueg talked about the colleges 50th anniversary and also about the printed schedule of classes. Discussion focused on the class schedule being sent out through the Heights mailing. There was discussion about the accuracy of the schedule, and questions about how effective it was. Kurt explained the past practice of mailing the full glossy schedule, and how some community members felt that mailing the schedule a waste of taxpayers dollars. Kurt explained further that the Heights approach allowed for both a more frequent and accurate course mailing. The problem with the two-quarter schedule was even more inaccuracies, and the cost of producing and mailing a glossy printed version. The Heights is mailed to 158,000 households, whereas the larger schedule was mailed to 34,000 homes. The current course schedule (Heights) is mailed to both the community and to current and former students. Kurts office works with the office of instruction to get the online schedule up in a timely manner, and Kurt acknowledged that hed like that process to move faster. One senator asked if people could get a reminder to look online, perhaps using a postcard and or a friendly email. Kurt then talked about the 50th anniversary activities his office is preparing for. Robert Cormia volunteered to work with Kurt on the 50th anniversary activity committee. Did I volunteer for this as well? I thought someone else did Resolution on the faculty and staff dining area There were comments that the phrase faculty / staff be added to replace the term 'faculty'. The resolution was passed. It was noted that the faculty and staff area would include the current A&R area and potentially the A&R breezeway. Classified senate, Art Hand, and Paul Starer would work together with the architect to plan this space. Rich Morasci will work on an ad hoc committee to collect comments and suggestions on the faculty / staff space. The redesigned A&R area would serve both faculty and staff development. Planning for this space needs to happen relatively soon certainly by end of June (30/2007) Paul Starer has asked that senators and faculty work with Rich on the faculty/staff area space planning committee. Karen Gillette volunteered to work with Rich. TRC handbook resolution on Academic Freedom - the FA attorney has looked through the resolution on the Academic Freedom Statement. Comments were made about the word 'faculty respect', and also about how academic freedom gives faculty a large amount of leeway in the instruction of a course as long as it reflects the divisions widely accepted beliefs and pedagogy. The system office of CCC has been more rigorous in their review of course submissions including methods of assessment. The focus on this 'Academic Freedom' was drafted in part to protect both the individual faculty member and also the method of instruction. The language of the resolution was ratified by a unanimous vote of the senate. Carolyn Holcroft discussed a problem that arose from the process of disbursement of financial aid checks. It impacted a students ability to access a textbook on reserve because of the library check out process, which requires all fees to be paid. Various comments were made about the process and how it affects students in our classes and the need for faculty to be aware that disbursement of checks can affect the ability of our students to purchase books early in the Qtr. It was noted that the hold on checking out books come from registration (A&R), not the library. The senate's constitution was discussed and suggested language to the election committee, which must craft a ballot for faculty to approve the suggested changes. Dolores reviewed the changes in particular a change of the word 'majority' from two-thirds majority to a simple majority (50% +1). The President of the senate is expected to review the constitution every three years, which was last done in calendar year 2004. An additional change was suggested to add a notice at the start of the document that the Brown Act covers senate meetings. Discussion of issues of proliferation of senate committees. Many committees have been approved by the senate, and have faculty sitting on committees, and possibly accruing PAA, that have not met in recent memory. The senate needs to have an understanding and reporting of these committees, what they do, and if they are active. Faculty serving on these committees should forward minutes and reports from committees to demonstrate that the committees meet. Rob Johnstone presented the new organization chart. Several of the changes occurred under the newly named VP of Workforce Development and Technology, and Rob would like a faculty member from each division to serve on the committee. Rob also mentioned the need for faculty members to serve on the basic skills initiative / task force. Dolores announced Paul Starers election as an at-large' representative for Academic Senate for the California Community Colleges. Paul Starer mentioned the intent to run a survey to poll faculty on their interest to move from the quarter system to a compressed semester, or even a trimester. The meeting was adjourned at 3:55 p.m. 5 / a b c 5 l >N6vmnoꞒzzzhrCJOJQJaJhBCJOJQJaJhLuCJOJQJaJh_CJOJQJaJhLuhrCJOJQJh_CJH*OJQJ'h_56B*CJOJQJ\]phhBCJOJQJhrCJOJQJh_CJOJQJh_CJOJQJ^J+'67P Q D E wxqr & p@ P !1$7$8$H$ n!o!""9" & p@ P !1$7$8$H$ 5 t !!7!n!o!!!9"hBCJOJQJh_CJOJQJhBCJOJQJaJh_CJOJQJaJhsCJOJQJaJ 50P/ =!"#$% Dp^ 666666666vvvvvvvvv666666>6666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666hH6666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666662 0@P`p2( 0@P`p 0@P`p 0@P`p 0@P`p 0@P`p 0@P`p8XV~_HmH nH sH tH @`@ NormalCJ_HaJmH sH tH DA D Default Paragraph FontViV Table Normal :V 44 la (k (No List HH s Balloon TextCJOJQJ^JaJPK![Content_Types].xmlj0Eжr(΢Iw},-j4 wP-t#bΙ{UTU^hd}㨫)*1P' ^W0)T9<l#$yi};~@(Hu* Dנz/0ǰ $ X3aZ,D0j~3߶b~i>3\`?/[G\!-Rk.sԻ..a濭?PK!֧6 _rels/.relsj0 }Q%v/C/}(h"O = C?hv=Ʌ%[xp{۵_Pѣ<1H0ORBdJE4b$q_6LR7`0̞O,En7Lib/SeеPK!kytheme/theme/themeManager.xml M @}w7c(EbˮCAǠҟ7՛K Y, e.|,H,lxɴIsQ}#Ր ֵ+!,^$j=GW)E+& 8PK!Ptheme/theme/theme1.xmlYOo6w toc'vuر-MniP@I}úama[إ4:lЯGRX^6؊>$ !)O^rC$y@/yH*񄴽)޵߻UDb`}"qۋJחX^)I`nEp)liV[]1M<OP6r=zgbIguSebORD۫qu gZo~ٺlAplxpT0+[}`jzAV2Fi@qv֬5\|ʜ̭NleXdsjcs7f W+Ն7`g ȘJj|h(KD- dXiJ؇(x$( :;˹!
