Paul Starer will email out an announcement in the next day. With vacancies by Debbie Budd and Don Dorsey, the senate will need to have confirmations for senators to sit on the interim hiring committees approved by email over summer. Minutes were approved pending typographical and editing changes. Consent calendar was approved. Formal agenda. A motion to approve the continued GE roll-in with Curriculum Committee was passed with one nay and one abstention. The election of Barbara Illowsky for District Senate President was approved unanimously. The senate discussed next years plan for the 2007-2008 session. The following general topics were discussed. Improving the reputation of the senate among faculty. Better communication with faculty Perhaps developing a senate newsletter Have a session on opening day The senates orientation for new faculty at Asilomar was discussed. Perhaps send an agenda and minutes to all faculty Discuss the role of senate in the shared governance process Improve senate administrative relationships in 2007-2007 The senates reputation with deans may be more difficult than our working relationship with admin The senates position and affect on block scheduling, or inability to affect the administrations position on block scheduling, may be an issue with faculty The senate also serves to counter-balance some administrative efforts that might overlook faculty participation. Financially, the senate will ask Judy Miner to have 17Թ pay for our statewide academic senate dues. The academic senate is a requirement by state law, and serves the ten plus one areas as described in our charter. In addition, all areas of curriculum are faculty primary reliance. Paul will also talk with Judy Miner about the total amount of release time for our three officers. We currently have a 1.0 plus 0.5 FTE release, which is shared among the three officers at: president 0.75, vice president 0.50, and secretary 0.25. We would like to have a total of 2.0 reassign time for activities that might include the newsletter. The issue of equivalency was discussed, including some of the ongoing issues at 17Թ, and the importance of equivalency district wide. Eminence has also been a difficult issue as part of equivalence. One senator mentioned that the value or character that an adjunct faculty brings to the college might not be well represented by equivalency. There was further dialog about adjunct skills, and having currency and expertise in some of the very narrow technical fields. The discussion about going from a quarter to a semester system was mentioned as a process which academic senate might want to get involved in early. Succession planning was brought up as a key area of concern. Paul Starer stated that he will not run for president or any other office next year, and should Dolores Davison choose to run, there would likely be a vacancy for vice president. Our senate, like most college senates, doesnt have a solid succession plan. Paul mentioned some of the unmet needs of the senate this year, including the faculty recognition award, and keeping track of committees. We need to create a reporting process for all the committees that we support, and disband committees that are non-performing. Abbey Brown mentioned that she took the resolution for faculty improvement to the student senate for consideration. Last, Paul Starer and Dolores Davison presented Robert Cormia with a statement of thanks for 3-4 years of service as senate secretary-treasurer. Robert thanked the senate, and mentioned his continued support for the senate website and electronic voting.
