Minutes: Minutes approved with the following corrections: Action and Information Items: Scheduling; info/discussion Penny Patz and Debbi Budd presented a discussion that the administration met with deans at a retreat and had an extensive discussion of the senate resolution asking for a return to a blended schedule. The consensus, after considering many pros and cons, was that a return to a blended scheduled created too much chaos in the attempt to schedule rooms, and that a return to such a schedule would not be feasible. Rather than return to a blended schedule, the senate was asked to consider a change in the structure of the overall schedule as a means to address several issues. This idea is very preliminary and would require the agreement of both 17Թ and De Anza , as well as acceptance by the faculty and renegotiation by the FA. Five options were presented as possibilities: -No changes, 3 quarters at 11.67 weeks plus finals. -Compressed 3 quarters at 10.67 weeks plus finals. -2 Semesters at 17.5 weeks plus finals. -2 compressed semesters at 16 weeks plus finals, plus possible interim sessions. -3 trimesters with 3 16 week sessions. Patz and Budd asked that we consider this set of options and find out if there is interest from faculty in one or more of the options. A future survey would be necessary to sort out preferences. Judy Minor is interested in these options, as are many of the support and administrative staff. Drawbacks would be primarily focused on reworking curriculum and recalculating load. Budd also presented some changes in the finals schedule to avoid students having 3 finals on the same day. The changes involved switching the first two sessions on both schedule patterns. Student readiness Greg Stoup presented trends in ESL and English enrollments and performance to help explain some of the current problems the school is having with student success in basic skills classes. The data show declines in both ESL enrollments and preparedness. Data also indicates an increase in English basic skills course enrollments, but a decline in preparedness. Few solid conclusions can be drawn from these data except that the placement tests and prerequisites are not good predicators of success. Discussion included some of the possible factors for poor performance, including placement tests that dont include writing samples, inconsistency in evaluation writing placement instruments, poor preparation at the high school level, and students communicating in todays world using means that dont relate to traditional academic standards. Elections Robert Hartwell and Brian Evans - Electronic elections will begin May 23rd and continue through May 30th. There are three candidates for the part-time faculty seat (, Donna Frankel, Charlie Krackeler, and Kay Thornton on the senate, and they will be asked to submit statements that will be shared with all faculty rather than participate in a forum. Two candidates are running for the secretary/treasurer position (Carolyn Holcroft-Burns and Tess Hansen), and they will participate in a forum on May 23rd from 2 to 3 PM. Constitution Minor language changes can be approved by the academic senate executive council via an electronic vote. These changes will be emailed to senate members for their consideration in the near future. Major changes will require a vote of the executive council to be placed on the ballot for consideration by the entire faculty. These ballot items will also be emailed to senate members for their consideration to place these items on the ballot. C3MS Dolores Davison stated that the C3MS system will be taken down for updates in the near future. The webmaster is waiting for an approved list of changes from the curriculum committee. The changes will include improving the approval sequence and adding places to insert additional information about courses. If you have information in the system it should be printed in the rare chance that the information is lost. The curriculum committee is also waiting a report from the Gen Ed Efficacy committee to determine their course for proceeding with general education approvals. Meeting adjourned: 3:58 p.m. %' ) ' ?
