Dolores Davison is stepping off the commencement committee, will need a replacement for the duration of the year December 6 will have a speaker on micro credit from 12-1 (college hour} Consent calendar was approved with the removal of a TRC at-large service request. At the previous meeting a PE job posting was withdrawn from the consent calendar pending clarification of procedures – the process was done correctly. The Minutes were approved with grammatical amendments as noted. Technology issues – Martha Kanter and Fred Sherman, our new Vice Chancellor of Technology, reviewed the current technology issues facing the FHDA, as well as introducing Fred to the Senate. Fred reviewed his career in the army and aerospace before entering education. He has taught and worked in counseling prior to joining 17ГдЙЯ. He asked the senate to report issues of concern, such as email, service level, etc. He mentioned the SIS (Student Information System) ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) system would be a key area for future development, as it has aged well beyond the support window. The entire process to replace our SIS may take six years. This includes needs assessment, vendor selection, implementation, and a ‘stabilization’ period. Security and disaster recovery are also high on his agenda. Our CMS (Course Management System) is also a big issue, including integration with both 17ГдЙЯ and De Anza SIS (ERP) systems. Project management and processes are also high priorities for him. One senator commented that our email system works very well. Having a newsletter that shares both the good and bad technology news would also be useful. The CMS and bookstore issues were brought up as an example where faculty should be involved in decisions as well as discussion when technology decisions are made. The wireless campus project was also brought up, with questions about when the system would be available. Smart Valley was mentioned as a potential partner in the project. Smart Valley might provide ‘outside access’ (public) network that would be separate from the internal (private) network we have. The outside (public) network would facilitate guest access without requiring the security and identity management overhead of an internal network. Contact HYPERLINK "mailto:ShermanFred@fhda.edu" ShermanFred@fhda.edu with any questions you have. Naomi Kitajima addressed the senate regarding smoking policy enforcement and a potential flu pandemic. Smoking is allowed only in the larger parking lots. Every main entrance will soon have a stenciled painted notice on the pavement stating that there is ‘no smoking beyond this point’. Questions were asked about enforceable areas, and the process of enforcement. A suggestion was made to eliminate smoking in both parking lots 5 and 6, as they have direct access to campus, and expose a considerable number of students and staff to second-hand smoke. Naomi next discussed a potential flu pandemic, and the literature, which is being handed out, on pandemic preparedness. If a pandemic occurs, campuses will be closed for a period of two to three weeks. It is very important that everyone get immunized with the flu vaccine if you can, and the pandemic being discussed here is a human, not an avian, influenza i.e. ‘bird flu’. The health office has an influenza nasal swab test, and will administer Tamiflu to persons testing positive for influenza. Rob Johnstone spoke about SLOs (Student Learning Outcomes) and FRAMES. There will be an SLO faculty coordinator, to reestablish our role as an SLO leader. An announcement will be emailed to faculty. Interested faculty should email Rob with a short description of why they should be chosen for the faculty coordinator position. Rob spoke about the success of FRAMES, and the goal to get 150 courses into FRAMES. Stipends of $1000 are available for faculty to help with FRAMES, and Rob will get a description of FRAMES sent out to each of the divisions. Karen Gillette addressed the senate about her research into block scheduling and faculty recognition. Karen described the results of the block scheduling study, which were inconclusive on academic impact to student learning outcomes. Karen shared a number of observations from her study. Overall, no conclusive results on change to student performance were noted, however colleges were encouraged to seek training and staff development. A comment was made that block scheduling has impacted some classes that don’t fall neatly into Monday-Wednesday or Tuesday-Thursday blocks. Karen next spoke about her research into faculty recognition and shared some insights that might be beneficial to our faculty. College faculty can apply for teaching or service awards, but the need to prepare a resume and a statement can be too much of an effort. We have not had a Hayward award applicant in the last four years. Faculty awards can be beneficial to the colleges. Faculty can be selected for teaching excellence, research, and or service to the community. Karen may describe the results of these studies, including an approach to faculty recognition, at a subsequent date. Faculty may access either of these reports directly from the senate website: HYPERLINK "http://www.foothill.edu/senate/documents/2006-07/Fall_06/readdirect.php" http://www.foothill.edu/senate/documents/2006-07/Fall_06/readdirect.php Pick-A-Prof – HYPERLINK "http://www.pickaprof.com/" http://www.pickaprof.com/ Data has been given to Pick-A-Prof for all faculty who taught at 17ГдЙЯ during spring quarter. It has been determined that grades are a matter of public record, and colleges across the United States have complied with requests from Pick-A-Prof to release data for faculty and their courses. ETUDES-NG - Paul Starer talked about the continuing dialogue among faculty regarding ETUDES-NG. Faculty will be required to take a 2-unit class in order to make this transition. Our admin has determined that faculty must make this transition by the end of Spring 2007, as ETUDES Classic cannot be supported during the summer. If faculty want to voice there concerns about ETUDES-NG conversion, they need to do it through a resolution process. The senate can continue to have a dialogue about this, but only a resolution from the senate can make this a formal statement to the administration. Concerned faculty are encouraged to work with Paul Starer to craft such a resolution.
