Meeting dates for spring quarter were sent out by Meeting Maker; April 17th, April 24th, May 8th, May 22nd, June 5th, and June 19th. The date of the retreat has not been set. The FHDA board has adopted +/- grading, ending a 20-year process. Students spoke at the meeting. Short courses have been suggested and collected, and may be included in the marketing survey. Thanks to the many faculty who provided ideas and content so quickly. Consent calendar: Konnilyn Feig, Kim lane, and Brian Evans added to the student discipline hearing pool. Three faculty names were submitted for Warren Hurds hiring committee being run by Rob Johnstone, After a lengthy discussion, the senate decided to take no action on the consent calendar that included Rosemary Arca, Brian Evans, and Debra Lew, as members of the hiring committee for the Dean of Faculty and Staff position. It was the senate's position that all faculty should have the opportunity to volunteer to serve on this important hiring committee and that these three faculty, while fully qualified to serve, were not selected through a faculty process, but rather hand picked by an administrative group. Mindful that this committee is under some time pressure to get up and running, all senators agreed to notice the members of their divisions about the opportunity to serve and that faculty interested in serving must contact Paul Starer no later than noon on Friday, March 24. The senate further agreed to conduct a consent calendar vote via email to expedite the confirmation process. At the end of Friday, it was decided to confirm Rosemary Arca, Brian Evans, and Debra Lew to serve on Warren Hurds replacement committee. Meeting topics: Lower campus naming: Karen Gillette spoke about Jean Thomass service while at 17Թ, and how she founded key programs to assist minority students in success and transfer, including Pass the Torch. Brent (need last name here) from ASFC spoke about his experience with Jean Thomas and Pass the Torch, and how it affected his college success. There was a motion to approve adding the academic senates name to support naming the lower campus building after Jean Thomas. Debate on the issue focused on monetary contributions, such as donors receiving the honor for naming a building. In this case, supporters argued that career service to the college could be just as important. Academic senate could endorse an effort to name the student center after Jean Thomas, without having to pass a resolution on the actual naming of the student center. The senate agreed that senators should bring this question back to their divisions for comment. Course materials policy Andy Fraknoi and Rosemary Arca. New version of the course materials document emphasizes academic freedom. This committee suggests that faculty might also recommend websites and other non-textbook items as required for their class. Rich Hansen California Community College initiatives. Guaranteed base funding uses Prop 98, and we should get 11%, but dont. Every one tenth of one percent represents 55 million dollars. Community Colleges in California get about 3% of the California budget. A fee adjustment of $17 to $13 per quarter unit and $26 to $20 per semester unit may be approved by the governance system. Funding problem needs to be addressed, otherwise colleges could face salary or benefit cuts in a few years. Students can help with signature gathering campaign, a total of one million signatures are needed for a successful ballot. Bond measure cannot use school assets or premises to promote the upcoming bond. Discussion focused on the importance of volunteering, including phone bank. The bond campaign could benefit from a faculty face to represent the school with a friendly face. Update on CTIS situation and request for new FSAs by Bernadine Fong. Cormia and Murphy reported on meetings within the CTIS division to create new FSAs, and increase, enrollment, WSCH and faculty productivity. The senate needs to weigh in on new FSAs from CTIS or any division. CIS and CS are current CTIS FSAs. Consider adding: PC Maintenance Networking Web Technologies Database Technologies Informatics CIS Office Technology Computer Applications Software Engineering The administration would like to have new FSAs to better define skill sets of each faculty member, however FA has cautioned that more specific FSAs can work against seniority.
