Senators will bring various treats and beverages. Senators should bring new senators from their division, and make sure to announce to your division if you are continuing on as Senator for 2006-2007 Elections of new senators: every division should have representation from two senators. Please announce to your division if you will not be continuing as senator for academic year 2006-2007. Asilomar retreat in fall Ц there are four spaces for three officers and an additional senator. Dolores was unanimously approved by DeAnzaТs senate to be our district Senate president. Minutes Ц approved with changes as noted. Consent calendar: four faculty have volunteered to serve on various committees. Agenda Judy Baker Ц the new dean of distance learning, introduced herself to the senate. She discussed her background in education and her tenure in Florida, and as an educator in Texas. She has been with 17│╘╣╧ for two weeks. She is originally from Virginia. As dean of the distance learning division, she will take on the day-to-day operations of FGA. Vivian Sinou's job to develop ETUDES NG is now part of the Chancellor's office, will be funded by the State of California. Judy said that she would help in the effort to increase student enrollment, and specifically to double online enrollment. She mentioned that over 40 faculty have converted from ETUDES 'classic' to ETUDES NG. Judy will resurrect the monthly faculty meetings as 'conversations' that can help 17│╘╣╧ faculty work through distance learning issues. Susan Rhines, associate secretary for the Faculty Association, discussed part time offices. The issue is the lack of office space for adjunct faculty. She spoke of the importance to students of access to all faculty. Many students are not prepared for college, e.g. study skills, and need to spend time with faculty. Both enrollment and retention improve with access to faculty. Issue has been the process and procedures for how part-time offices and the office assignments are made. Clarification on the issue revolved on whether there was an issue at 17│╘╣╧ that was similar to DeAnza College, or whether 17│╘╣╧ was attempting to provide offices, but simply didn't have enough space. Some part-time faculty have more demands for space than others, and just didn't have enough. Some part-time faculty will have long breaks between their morning and afternoon courses. One senator suggested a central location for part-time faculty to meet. Some divisions have many more part-time faculty than other divisions. Assigning office space is a dean's prerogative. Some divisions have more space, even vacant offices now. Many students have difficulty in finding adjunct faculty on campus at any time. Part-time inclusion can be a parallel issue here. Presidential compensation for summer duties. Summer duties include equivalency requests, board meetings and board retreat, and other duties as required. In the past, $2500 was allocated for summer work, but given the amount of work, which increases every year, it was decided to propose $3000. Funds come from the B budget, and not the senate. Rules were suspended so that we could act on the issue today. A motion to approve $3000 for compensation for the senate president over summer was approved unanimously. Classified senate gift approval - there was significant and substantive negative comments about the notion of approving senate dues funds for a gift for retiring president Fong. Senators commented that a gift of $500 for either person was inappropriate, and would set a precedent that might have to be repeated when other deans left. A motion to approve $500 gift was failed. Feedback on plus / minus voting. A Web presence was suggested, as well as a proposal to have another session on grading on opening day. Textbook issue - enforceability was raised as a potential issue. Language on the resolution for textbook can be changed, but should be done soon. JDG Ц JDH was originally a deliberative body, which has now gained a broader scope. The group grew too large and handled too many issues that weren't of an academic or professional issue. Makeup included two academic Senate presidents, College presidents, etc. A resolution has been brought forward as documented by Dan Mitchell. VPs of instruction may attend by invitation. By comparison, CAC is a different institution than the former JDG, as CAC is a 'Noah's Ark group'. The proposed new group will deliberate only on issues that fall into the 10+1 area. JDG originally came from APIC, Former JDG and its limited membership, allowed for a more 'deliberative' conversation on academic matters. This group must keep confidentiality on some issues. The new 'JDG' would continue to be advisory, and not take on deliberative motions (votes) and rather seek to gain consensus. Fong resolution Ц the senate discussed the order and length of the various whereas clauses from each division. We will continue to edit this document, and Paul Starer was acknowledged for his effort to produce the first round of edits.
