The minutes of March 20th were approved with one abstention. The consent calendar was withdrawn. Meeting agenda Faculty representation on the interim president selection committee - Discussion on the selection process for interim president focused on the need for wide representation, efficiency, and speed of forming the committee. We really donТt have a codified process to approve faculty for such a committee in such a manner. A change to the current process would need to be codified through a formal election process. Would we get enough faculty volunteers if we asked for more information from candidates? Equivalency discussion Ц Duncan Graham represented the deanТs view on this topic. Equivalency is mostly an issue of eminence, which is really the crux of the discussion. What qualifies, as УeminenceФ is really the central question? For perspective, the problem typically occurs right near the start of the quarter, when an adjunct will pull out of an assignment Ц leaving the dean with no one to teach the course, and a lot of WSCH at stake. It can be problematic to decide equivalency, as once equivalence has been granted it canТt be easily taken away, and faculty would be able to teach other courses in that discipline. This issue is very problematic, and even endemic, as data suggest that statewide single course equivalency, which isnТt a legal process, is occurring in 40% of community colleges across the state. One senator asked why we donТt go back to the Сlimited service credentialТ that we once had? All the deans and faculty have a stake in maintaining professionalism of faculty, and it was again stated that equivalency is a Сprimary relianceТ issue, so faculty should be СengagedТ in this discussion. This might involve faculty helping to define what is СeminenceТ in any one particular area. Paul StarerТs proposal for determining equivalency was discussed briefly, as well as a notion of adjunct faculty moving through a process of СapprenticeshipТ leading to СmasteryТ as a former model of establishing equivalence. Debate also touched on teaching experience as well as academic standards. It was suggested that faculty consider writing an equivalency into the disciplines list. 17│╘╣╧ Marketing Program Ц Kurt Hueg and Francis Gusman discussed the survey efforts to try to understand how to approach the local adult audience. Kurt discussed the various advertising techniques. Newspapers are very effective for career change oriented adults. Kurt discussed the Internet initiatives, including Google search and AdWords"!, the cost and effectiveness, and click-through and keyword reports that are available to view. Email database marketing and further Web development would be possible with a content developer position that will be filled in the near future, including a student intern who will be working with the group over summer. Kurt discussed a Google search feature recently added to the website, and how we could leverage that to increase overall effectiveness of our website. The marketing budget was about $300,000 for last year, and slated to be increased to $375,000 for next year. Much of that increase will be used to increase the effectiveness of our marketing outreach effort. If our goal is to increase WSCH as well as replace СchurnТ, we may need an even larger budget for more expensive media purchases, especially radio. Senators commented that 17│╘╣╧ needed a more friendly registration process for high school students, who are often forced to register on the first day of class. Course materials policy / resolution Ц as an action item a motion to approve the course materials resolution was passed with 16 yes and 1 no vote. Naming of the Student Center Ц The senate continued the discussion from last week of naming the Student Center after the late Jean Thomas. Dialogue focused on whether the senate should be involved in this dialogue at all, as it is not in the Т10 plus 1Т areas of responsibility. One senator commented that involving the senate in such activities could erode all the good will that the senate has earned over the last few years. A motion to pass a resolution in favor of naming the student center after Jean Thomas was defeated on 3 yes votes, 4 no votes, and 6 abstentions. State Senate Plenary Resolutions Ц Paul Starer briefed the senate on three key and interrelated resolutions that would be brought before the state academic senate in spring plenary. They revolve around whether adjunct faculty should be allowed to teach up to an 80% load in any one district. Dialogue focused on sentiment of the state academic senate to improve the working conditions for part-time faculty, one being access to larger instructional loads. Part-timers in many schools donТt receive a lot of perks, including offices, access to equipment, etc. Senators should share information with constituents about this issue, and report back to Paul Starer and Dolores Davison at the meeting on April 24th. They will represent 17│╘╣╧ faculty at this meeting, and need to understand our various views and opinions. The senate was adjourned at 4:05 p.m. .┼╟ПС'№··H*5Б\Б /0YZhiноь !й к ╘ ╒ [\яЁ°∙МН¤¤¤¤¤¤√¤¤¤¤¤¤√¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤¤'■Н╦╠ФХ'¤¤¤¤¤¤¤ 1Рh░╨/ ░р=!░"░#Ра$Ра%░ i8@ё 8 NormalCJ_HaJmH sH tH 2`2 Heading 1$@&5Б\Б<A@Є б< Default Paragraph Font╛ (     /0YZhiноь !
