After quorum the minutes were approved without changes. The consent calendar was also approved. Announcements: College opening day theme will be УThe Amazing RaceФ. Meetings, games and activities related to that theme are being planned. Day will focus on learning outcomes. A keynote speaker has been selected. On Monday, 6/20/05, from 6 to 8 PM, the board of trustees meeting will be held in room 1401 on the 17│╘╣╧ campus. Please inform your constituents to attend. District opening day plans are still being finalized and should be complete soon. The chancellor and senate presidents from both campuses are arranging a conference format for the day. Input on topics from faculty is urged. Inform your constituents that the plus/minus grading pilot is still in operation. The math department let the student senate know that they have made changes in their book adoptions from Wiley that will create savings for students. Rita OТLaughlin is interested in serving on the safety committee. Jose Nave may be interested in the district budget committee. Senators from respective divisions for next year are listed below: -LA: Rosemary Arca and Rich Morasci in winter, Mary Haterfield in one quarter, other quarters open -PSME: no changes, Andy Fraknoi and Rick Martinez -FA: Robert Hartwell is the only designee at this time -Counseling: no one yet -CTIS: Robert Cormia and Jamie Doll -Lib: no report -PE: no report -BHS: Carolyn Holcroft Burns and David Sauter -AL: no changes, Mary Hawkins and Janet Spybrook -BSS: Delores Davison and Brian Evans Action and Information Items: Curriculum and General Education Committee. Dolores Davison outlined some of the work ahead for the newly combined Curriculum/GE committee. Issues they will be addressing include: Lower Division Transfer Pattern. This concept, shortened to LDTP, is being considered by for the 30 most popular majors in the CSU system. The idea is to reward students for declaring a major early in their college career, then limiting the number of lower level courses taken at a community college. In return the CSUs were guaranteeing admission for those who performed at a certain level. This concept can have serious impact on many majors at the community colleges since students will no longer be allowed to take more than a token number of major credits. It is also unlikely that the CSU system can guarantee admission. The concept is possibly motivated by several reasons, most likely the desire to improve enrollment and protect income from enrollments and from improper validation of anecdotal data. Along with the demise of CAN, which is being sunset in 2007, the prospects for maintaining a successful transfer program will be diminished. Course outlines of record are not being followed, and the committee will be looking at ways to assure they are followed. Advisories and prerequisites for courses will also be examined. This action is continuing from previous initiatives, but recent discussions in math and other divisions underscore the need to examine the issue. The continuing problem of how to assess entering abilities to improve placement remains, hindered by flaws in timing, effectiveness of the assessment, and the legality of placement. The problems are compounded by logistical problems with the enrollment system. At a minimum the message from student services should be consistent regarding advisories and prerequisites. The discussion of membership will also be raised. Specifics will include the number of members allowed from each division, the number of voting members from each division, and whether the deanТs roles should be expanded or limited. Currently there are 3 voting deans on the committee and questions about that role on a committee where faculty have primary reliance raises additional questions. The workload created from the combined committees will be evaluated during the year to help determine if the combination effort was successful. Senate budget report: Robert Cormia presented a very brief status of the senate budget. We currently have about $10,000 in our savings, which increases roughly $800 per month. During fall, we will pay about $2,500 in State academic senate dues, leaving about $2,500 to sponsor special faculty conferences or sponsoring special colloquia, $2,500 for items such as an academic newsletter subscription to Chronicle of Higher Education, and $2,500 for student scholarships. With a larger budget in 2005-2006, the senate should consider how to make investments that foster academic professionalism. Discussion of student learning outcomes occupied most of the remainder of the meeting. Rob Johnstone discussed how SLOs would be a focus of increasing effort in the fall, and asked how the senate could both participate and promote those activities. The senate has a presence on LOAN, however SLOs are still a very new concept for many faculty. In fall the college will look for a few faculty that can help to develop an awareness of SLOs. The meeting was adjourned at 5:15 p.m., with recognition of Paul StarerТs hard work. .фЇ; Y №№№5Б\Б./ъNOуфєЇ┐■р2 ╚ H Л М я !
