The consent calendar was also approved unanimously. Patricia Crespo-Martin, chairing the scholarship committee, announced a $3000 scholarship for indigenous people. Senators are encouraged to announce this to faculty in their divisions. Paul Starer announced that we still need a faculty member for the TRC Due Process committee. Paul Starer reminded senators that the October 25th senate meeting will be held at DeAnza in conference room A the DeAnza Senate chambers. Paul made a presentation to the senate on plus / minus grading, including a brief history of the plus / minus issue over the last few years. Both colleges will use the same data collection method. In submitting final grades, if you don’t have any plus minus grades, then you don’t use them in the grade sheet. The final format for indicating whether a faculty member does or doesn’t use plus / minus grading has not yet been decided, and requires agreement with DeAnza. The senate will issue a letter when the final format for submitting plus / minus grades is determined. When the final draft of the letter is made available, all P/T faculty will need to be informed. Paul showed a draft of a letter, including text from admissions and records. Rob Johnstone suggested that we have a disclaimer at the top of the letter, saying that if you don’t have plus / minus grading to disregard the instructions. Additionally, an instruction sheet will be stapled to all of the final grade sheets when they are distributed. Paul then presented a summary of the English and math requirements issue, using a PPT lecture entitled “Should English and Math Requirements be Raised?” Paul discussed the history and activities held at conferences and colloquia. Half of the CCs have a lower standard for English and math requirements compared to 17ГдЙЯ. Paul discussed the pro and con arguments for raising or lowering English and math requirements, both locally and statewide. Paul Starer wrote a resolution for a first-read and will circulate it for senators to review. Resolved: The academic senate of 17ГдЙЯ urges the state academic senate to initiate the process that would raise the English and Math requirements for an AA or AS degree to English 1A (or its equivalent) and Intermediate Algebra (or its equivalent) and authorizes its voting delegates to the state senate’s plenary sessions to cast their votes in favor of any resolutions which accomplish these changes in graduation requirements. Paul Starer and Dolores Davison need to hear from senators if we want them to vote at the State Academic Senate for all community colleges to adopt the higher math and English standards. Paul Starer will send the PowerPoint file for senators to circulate among their divisions. During discussion several issues were raised, including concerns about local control, student retention and persistence and the fairness of these higher standards. Senate stipends were discussed again. Senator generally agreed that some remuneration is a good idea for senate service. Several different amounts were suggested. Bio/Health representative, David Sauter, announced he would bring a resolution forward to the body that would address this issue. The last issue to be brought up was basic skills, which Paul Starer presented as a ‘first read’. Several question regarding the issue of basic skills were presented and discussed. At the suggestion of Andrew Fraknoi, a representative from PSME, senate leadership will review the issues and concerns related to basic skills students and bring forward specific recommendations for the senate to consider. The meeting was adjourned at 4:23 p.m. А"А# $ %А i(@ёџ( NormalCJmH 0@0 Heading 1$@&5<A@ђџЁ< Default Paragraph Font*B@ђ* Body Text63 џџџџ!џџ z™ џџ z™G3Ф3 w3 355џџRobert D.
