December 6 great speaker on micro credit from 12-1 (college hour} Consent calendar was approved with the addition of faculty for a hiring committee. A senator from the PE division stated that since no senator from a division approved of a hiring committee that the consent calendar should be withdrawn for that item. Mike Murphy was added to consent calendar to serve on the hiring committee for vice chancellor of finance. Keith Pratt was added to ESL faculty search committee. Judy Craig, Kelley Rippa, and Doug Boyette were also added for search committees. The Minutes were approved with amendments as noted. Textbook adoption - Romeo Pauli addressed the senate on the issue of textbook requisition. Account set up will not require a bill to ship to address in the account set up stating in spring. In the mean time you can use a set up of 17Թ for first/last name, or email you book request to Romeo. The book database did not include some books that faculty had once used. Notary files were a complaint of many faculty. It was suggested that we bring the application in house using an open database. Romeo showed the textbook acquisition screens as a demonstration. Senators commented that the system was really new, and that there wasnt a timely response to email help requests. A senator suggested that faculty might be asked to approve or at least give consent when a new system / process is brought in, especially a complicated system, or at least be involved in the discussion. One faculty noted that the training session itself didnt work. The demonstration of the textbook software today brought up similar problems as noted in our earlier discussion. One senator noted that the integration of technology into the instructional process could have a very big impact. The senate might consider writing a resolution to ensure that faculty are involved in technology process decisions, as early as possible. This will ensure both involvement as well as a smother transition to technology adoption. Romeo noted that the purchase of e-books would be supported by this system. Resolution for an at-large part-time senator One senator commented that their divisions senator represented all faculty, full-time and part-time, and that a separate at-large faculty, (representation) wasnt needed. There was a thought that an additional senator would dilute the full-time faculty representation. An additional strong note of support for the resolution was that 17Թ is one of the few community colleges in the state to not have a part-time faculty representative. However, compensation for that position was seen as giving a faculty member same thing that full-time faculty dont have the part-time faculty rep from De Anza spoke about the needs of part-time faculty that arent brought up and made easy for part-time faculty. Part-time faculty that serve on academic senate executive arent paid extra for their service (outside of the $25 per quarter we compensate division faculty) whereas full-time faculty are also paid a salary. De Anza's part-time senator said that they are developing a part-time faculty list for better communication between senators and their faculty. Some senators argued that full-time faculty are compensated for senate service, through salary, whether or not they in-fact participate in committee service on campus. A statement about the importance of reaching out to all faculty (especially part-time) was a matter of equity, especially when students are concerned. Other divisions weighed in that part-time inclusion is important. A recommendation was made to vote yes or no on the entire resolution, and then vote separately on the compensation issues. The compensation model for the part-time senator varies across the state. De Anzas election in Spring 2006 was for a part-time senator, and for compensations. A suggestion was made to add a clause that recognized the disparity in compensation between part-time and full-time faculty. The compensation issue was debated quite a bit, especially the point about whether senate service is extra for full-time faculty as well as part-time faculty. A motion was made that we change the language to the resolution was failed (for compensating the senators). A motion was made to vote on the resolution as it is, and then separation the whereas clauses in the final full-faculty vote in winter. A resolution to carry the resolution forward to the election committee was passed. Susan Malmgram addressed the senate on the issue of RPC a way to recycle computers for needy students. Students can call and get a Windows 98 machine free for asking. De Anza has an emergency scholarship of ~ $100 (or a computer). The student doesnt need to fill out a FASFA form, only the information forms. There are 42 computers to be given away. Susan announced that the COMTEX program (careers in IT). Internships might be available for students to explore IT careers. The IT industry is very concerned that engineers and technicians might not be available for the needs of tomorrows workforce, and that we should be training a much larger number of future IT workers right now. She commented about several success cases of interns finding work in industry after completing the program. Students with an F-1 visa can apply for the program, but are harder to place in industry. C3MS overview - A discussion of the C3MS system focused on a request for more information on the curriculum process and integration of C3MS. The curriculum committee has worked very hard to bring C3MS forward with good visibility of the process to faculty. Senators discussed the importance of being involved in the development process early on. C3MS was an evolutionary process / system where information, such as Course Outline of Records (CORs) was in an older database and disconnected from other scheduling systems. A user group will be formed to help faculty with usability and process issues. If anyone is interested in participating in the user group please contact Dolores Davison. Block scheduling and faculty recognition will be re-agendized to the Dec 4th meeting. ETUDES NG Judy Baker addressed the senate about the ETUDES-NG learning management system, and faculty concerns about its evolution and adoption. She introduced herself as a Web CT certified trainer. She worked at CSU Chico, and then at Florida Community College. Judy has also developed training courses. She brought a presentation that compared and contrasted features and benefits of each of the systems (Web CT, Blackboard), followed by a lengthy Q&A session. Judy described the considerable time and effort in preparing the review documents, using real and fictitious students, converting and setting up classes, etc. Judy reviewed the key and essential features of each of the systems, including licensing and hosting. She discussed costs of developing ETUDES-NG that have real dollars, and other development / frustration costs. ETUDES-NG training might be an issue for some part-time and full-time faculty, but is a very worthwhile and effective investment of time. New NG features require training to master, and for ensuring ease of use, attending the ETUDES-NG orientation sessions is highly recommended. An ETUDES NG conversion course will be offered Wednesday, Nov 29, 12-1:15 /KCI. There was a strong faculty voice about getting help with the ETUDES Classic => NG conversion efforts. The June 2007 deadline may be very difficult for some faculty to adapt to. A suggestion was made to maybe have ETUDES classes available over the summer quarter 2007, when faculty would have a breather in their schedule to make the conversion. Training and conversion support could be available from Judys group. Faculty would really like to have the system available over the summer. Could staffing be increased for conversion efforts during a summer 2007 conversion effort?
