Budget committee needs a faculty member (Jay Patyk may be interested) A holographic presentation will occur in Bernadine Fongs office on Wednesday. Patricia Crespo Martin would like faculty to advertise the campus abroad program. Kim Lane announced the Martin Luther King celebration to be held on Wednesday. Kee Hoon discussed starting a network to buy and sell used textbooks. Paul Starer also discussed the rising costs of textbooks, and a plan to meet with Kee Hoon on this issue. Vocational education leadership institute 2005 will qualify for a negotiated flex day. The application is due by February 18th. Meets March 10th 12th List of resolutions for Fall Plenary session will be announced at the January 24th meeting. The minutes from the January 10th meeting were approved unanimously. There was nothing is on the consent calendar for this meeting. The student equity plan was discussed briefly; it had no metrics associated with goals. A move to approve student equity plan, motion was approved unanimously. In California budget news, the governors budget included 3% COLA, no STRS funding, and news on Proposition 98 is uncertain. Paul Starer announced that the college soda contract would go to Pepsi, as Coca Cola had no interest in pursing the contract. Updates from the round table the campus police will increase enforcement of speeding. Status of the guardrail on one corner on the loop road is not yet decided. We will move to block scheduling in the fall quarter. This wont be a universally welcome transition, but we will be 90% blocked in our implementation. Basic skills task force. Karen Alfsen and Penny Johnson from the basic skills task force are recommending learning communities be added to pedagogy wherever possible and practical. The combined matriculation and basic skills committee has met just once, and may need a new time to meet (more convenient) to increase faculty participation. Prerequisites are important for success, and learning communities for helping retention. Students still put off math until the very end. The topic of auto registration of math was discussed. We could use TouchNet"! registration system to automatically enroll students in basic skills. Would this be legal? If the practice followed matriculation guidelines, then students would have to follow it. We will look at matriculation issues regarding prerequisites, advisories, and requiring basic skills be taken early in a students program Many studies around the state show that taking basic skills courses early in a students program helps overall student success, especially in math related courses, and the reverse is also true. Systemic issues include changes to student make up, and who should be taking basic skills courses. Some of the study data is confounded, and might require additional analysis before making stronger recommendations. Studies show better-prepared students do better and prerequisites are important, especially for students entering right from high school. At the state level, the topic of requiring stronger math and English has been difficult. We might be evolving towards a two-tier community college district, i.e., an AA light degree and lower standards for vocational students. Penny and Karen would like the senate to work on the topic of advisories and prerequisites in the current and spring session. Advisories are easier to set up for courses than prerequisites, and would not block students during enrollment. We need content expertise to set up an advisory, while research is required to set up a prerequisite. 17Թ and DeAnza College should also share the two math and English exams, exactly. Currently they are different. We need to have departments start using consistent pedagogy, calibrate learning outcomes, etc. DeAnza has readers and 17Թ does not. There was a great deal of debate and dialogue on all the issues mentioned above. Dolores Davison spoke on the disciplines list. Each change to the list will be brought to the state academic senate in plenary session (20 to 30 changes to disciplines). Senators should get faculty in the disciplines to look at the changes; need to get comments ASAP. Dead day discussion. From JDG, DeAnza students have pushed the topic of a dead day to replace dead week. Dead day has not been agendized within the senate as of yet. Bernadine Fong announced that bids for the construction student center and lower campus came in way over estimates and we will need to raise additional funds in future bond measures. The cost of building supplies has gone way up during measure E. The student center will be torn down soon (late January). Bernadine discussed the student issue involving an essay by a student, the dialogue around this issue on the Internet, block scheduling, and learning communities. She discussed the Academic Bill of Rights and that academic senate may wish to agendize this issue. Student enrollments at all community colleges statewide are down probably the result of higher fees enacted. Meeting adjourned at 4:36 p.m. Jf=@PQS `x ' 7 W Y "')|~""CJOJPJQJH*CJPJ 5B*phOJQJ 5OJQJ OJPJQJPJ55CJCJ5 IJf=Q $d$If`$If]` p$If $If^$a$ IJf=QRSz 0@`x $ % & ( + - . 0 2 3 4 5 7 8 B [ z { ' : ` [QRSzzxtttt$If$$Ifl4F5`,40;76 4 laP zltdtztttt`$If]` pH$If$$Ifl4F5 ,40;76 4 laP 0@`xztttit $d$If$If$$Ifl4F5 ,40;76 4 laPzttttttttt$If$$Ifl4F5,40;76 4 laP $ . 8 B |vvv||vvv|vvvv$If$$IflF5,=0;76 4 laP B [ z ' v pj$If$If$$IflF5,=0;76 4 laP$If : ` k[[[[[$a$ 8 B@$$IflF5,=0;76 4 laP$If $d$If ` ; < J K < = +, ,-PQAB OPXY c"d""" 9` ; < J K < = +,$a$ 8 B@ ,-PQABOPXY c"d"""dh#0= /!"#$%|HH(Fe(HH(d'` i4@4NormalCJOJPJQJmH 4@4 Heading 1$@&5CJPP Heading 2 $./@&^` 5OJQJ<@< Heading 3$H@&^H5CJ44 Heading 4$@&5CJRR Heading 5%$$@&a$ 8 B@5CJZZ Heading 6%$$@&a$ 8 B@5B*CJph<A@<Default Paragraph Font2B@2 Body Text CJOJQJ(>@(Title$a$5(U@( Hyperlink>*B*<?@"<Closing $dCJOJPJQJ^Q^Signature Job Title$$d^CJOJPJQJXQ2XSignature Name$$d^CJOJPJQJ.@R.
