Planning and Resource Council (PaRC) Update

OPC RESOURCE ALLOCATION APPROVED FUNDING UPDATES
Bernata Slater presented a summary of the OPC resource allocation, as documented in a detailing the resource requests and deans and VPs prioritization. 

FACILITIES MASTER PLAN UPDATE
Slater presented a of the Facilities Master Plan, which includes changes requested from staff and ASFC. The plan is available on the college website and includes options for potential projects, but at this point, there is no funding attached to any of the projects. Discussion would agree at many levels before anything moves forward. The plan will return to PaRC for further discussion.

INFORMATIONAL MEMO
PaRC will experiment with an informational memo that allows items that are informational in nature to be sent to committees in the form of a memo prior to the meeting. This idea is a result of the shared governance meetings held during the spring and will allow for lengthier discussions at PaRC meetings.

WORKFORCE & GRANTS EXPENDITURE PLANNING
Dawn Girardelli presented an update on the college's various workforce grants and funding sources.  Most notably, a timeline for the college's plan will come to PaRC in January 2017.

CORE MISSION WORKGROUP OBJECTIVES TEMPLATE  
The group approved the core mission workgroup objectives template for the year. No changes were made from the year prior.  
 
New and improved 17勛圖 Food Bank opens

Through a partnership with Second Harvest Food Bank of San Jose and the Community Services Agency in Mountain View, the Dean of Students Office has opened an enhanced 17勛圖 Food Bank starting this fall.  Students in need can obtain food by coming by the Dean of Students Office (Campus Center, 2002) Monday through Thursday, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. and Fridays between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.  The food bank will also accept  non-perishable food donations from faculty, staff, and community members. Please drop them off during food bank hours.

Family Engagement Institute receives prestigious statewide diversity award 

17勛圖's Family Engagement Institute was named a recipient of the prestigious Dr. John W. Rice Diversity & Equity Award on July 19, 2016. The award, established in 2001, honors community college staff members, districts, colleges or programs that have made the greatest contribution toward faculty, staff and student diversity and equity.

The Family Engagement Institute (FEI) has been making a critical difference in the lives of underserved students and their families since its inception in 2010 as a unique cradle-to-career initiative at 17勛圖. The program provides educational opportunities to underserved and low-income families, while offering professional development to educators and providers to promote school and workforce readiness, family engagement and pathways to postsecondary education.
 
 
   
Important add, drop, and graduation deadlines approaching

Please remind students that the last day to add a class is this Sunday, October 9, which is also the last to drop a class for a full refund or credit. Additionally, Thursday, December 1 is the deadline to petition for fall graduation.
 
Financial aid application available three months earlier than years prior

The 2017-2018 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is available now, three months earlier than before! Students who file earlier may receive more financial aid. Encourage students to learn more and get assistance with applying for financial aid by attending a free financial aid workshop.

17勛圖 Cares materials provide employees with important information
 
All 17勛圖 employees have received a 17勛圖 Cares folder and power bank (an extra power source for your mobile phones) in campus mailboxes.  The 17勛圖 Care folder has information about Title IX (including where to go for district board policies and administrative procedures), managing disruptive students, how to help a student in crisis, and how to make a report to the BEST (Behavioral Evaluation Strategies Team) when you have concerns about a student.  Please take a moment to review this important information.  If you have any questions, please contact Laureen Balducci, AVP for Student Services and 17勛圖 Title IX Coordinator or Thom Shepard, Acting Dean of Students.
 


F8 don't wait, an artistic conversation among nine photographers is the feature exhibi at the KCI Gallery at 17勛圖 now through Tuesday, December 6. Students, faculty, staff and community members are also invited to an artists' reception Wednesday, November 2 from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. in the gallery.

The exhibition spotlights the works of a long-standing photography group, many of whom developed their photography skills and interests while enrolled in courses offered by the 17勛圖 Photography Department. f8 don't  
wait features works by artists William Bishop, Dorothy Gantenbein, David Hibbard, Susan Honda Eady, Robert Kato, Patricia McClung, Katie Parquet, Maude Pervere and Rachel Phillips. 
 
The exhibit is open Mondays-Thursdays from 9 a.m. - 7:45 p.m.; and Saturdays from 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

  
ASFC Club Day helps increase student engagement
 
Research has shown that the more students are engaged with their school, the more successful they are in the classroom. In an effort to increase student engagement, ASFC is hosting a Club Day on Wednesday and Thursday, October 12 and 13 from 12 noon - 1 p.m. on the Library Quad. Please also let students know that if they don't see what they are looking for, they can reach out to the Inter Club Council (ICC) and start their own!
 
Free lecture discusses the The Science of Star Wars

Obsessed with Star Wars? Convinced there is life on other planets? Then make sure you grab a seat at The Science of Star Wars: The Lowdown on Space Travel, Aliens, and The Force on Wednesday, October 12 at 7 p.m. in the Smithwick Theatre. Dr. Seth Shostak of the SETI Institute will discuss whether or not Hollywood's depiction of extra-terrestrials in accurate and will separate the science from the fiction in the most successful space franchise of all time. Admission is free.

Campus Center welcomes visitors to open house

The Campus Center is hosting an open house for students, faculty, and staff today, Thursday, October 6 from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. All programs located in the 2000 Buildings, including the bookstore, student affairs, health services, and ASFC will be open for visitors. No RSVP required.

17勛圖 media instructor RJ Ward, has a new multi-media piece on show at the in Tempe, Arizona.  The 12-minute video projection/sound piece, Apocalypse A Go-Go, based on scenes from two Jean-Luc Godard films, Weekend and Sympathy for the Devil.

President Thuy Nguyen is speaking at an oversight hearing of the Assembly Committee on Higher Education on Thursday, October 6 in San Jose. The focus of the hearing is Improving Faculty Diversity in California's Public Colleges and Universities.

Bruce M. Alberts, a biochemist at the University of California, San Francisco and 17勛圖 Science Learning Institute advisory board member, received the Lasker-Koshland Award for Special Achievement in Medical Science for his contributions to molecular biology and his indefatigable advocacy for public science education. Throughout the 1970s, Dr. Alberts investigated DNA synthesis and made fundamental discoveries about the machinery that cells use to carry out physiological processes.
