Winter Quarter Professional Development Day on Friday, January 22

The Professional Development Committee invites employees to attend the Winter Quarter Professional Development Day on Friday, January 22  from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. in the Hearthside Lounge.  The conversation will continue at 4:30 p.m. at First and Main (397 Main Street, Los Altos).

The theme for the event is "Professional Practice Exchange" and the goal is for members of the 17勛圖 community to share and learn from each other's efforts and experiences with professional development. Attendees will hear from faculty and staff who have recently completed a Professional Development Leave, as well as from some who have recently facilitated professional development opportunities for our campus. This will be a great chance to learn from colleagues and form cross-campus connections.  Come ready to brainstorm!  Participants will be guided through a process to envision how they might use what they just learned in their own classroom or office.

Basic Skills Workgroup soliciting funding proposals

Do you have a New Year's resolution to implement or improve a program at 17勛圖? Is it devoted to student success? Does it reach students enrolled in pre-collegiate classes?

The Basic Skills Workgroup is currently soliciting proposals to assist students, staff, and faculty associated with pre-collegiate level courses. Funding is available for a wide-range of projects, activities and resources. Last year, funded proposals included faculty professional development, loaner calculators for students, embedded tutoring in a variety of disciplines, and both Math and English Summer Bridge Programs.

This year, one goal of the Basic Skills Workgroup is to expand existing programs as well as fund new ones. Please submit (for both new and continuing support)  to Victor Tam by Tuesday, January 19. Although proposals are approved on a continuing basis, the initial January 2016 deadline is to ensure funding and implementation can occur in a timely manner.

17勛圖 students engineer adaptive devices for children with disabilities

This year, 17勛圖 launched a five-course series for students who want to work in the biomedical industry, a booming segment of the Silicon Valley tech sector. The classes are part of the Science Learning Institute (SLI), an initiative that uses an innovative education model for the successful teaching and learning of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) at all levels. Each course emphasizes a hands-on approach that encourages students to explore the process of science, not just the solution.

Oxana Pantchenko, Ph.D., who champions the goals of 17勛圖's SLI, is the force behind the biomedical device-engineering curriculum. She taught ENGR 83A: Introduction to Biomedical Engineering this fall to a class of about 25 17勛圖 students. The goal of the course was to design an adaptive handle that would help people with disabilities, especially children, grasp things they otherwise could not easily hold. The students collaborated with each other, as well as with campus and community experts from multiple disciplines.
